Going into the Gang Green's bye week of the 2006-07 season, it looks very promising that the Jets will head into it (5-3) playing a (1-5) Cleveland Browns team that has scored less than 15 pts averaged in their first six games. Add into that the Jets are playing on the road where they are (2-1) in Cleveland as the Browns have yet to win a homegame this year in 3 trips. In order for the Jets to win their third straight game, this is what Gang Green needs to do:
Jets rookie center Nick Mangold has to stop defensive tackle Ted Washington, weighing at almost 400 pounds and 6-foot-5! Mangold is not quite as huge as Washington is. Mangold has to avoid being on the pile or he will get crushed. This matchup is a key game because depending on how Mangold plays against Washington, that will determine how good the Jets run defense will be on Sunday.
WR Jerrico Cothchery will have to continue to get open and making big plays against a Browns secondary that is not very good. Cothery comes into the Jets halfway mark of the season with 30 receptions for 418 yards to go with his 3 recieving touchdowns.
The Jets game plan on defense against a limited Browns offense will have to change a bit since the Browns offense coordinator Maurice Carthon resigned last week and now Jeff Davidson is at the helm of the Browns offense. Davidson is expected to bring a new gameplan to the table for a Browns team ranked last in the NFL in total offense, which could offset the Jets defense.
QB Chad Pennington should thrive against a Browns secondary that is missing keynote players in Gary Baxter and Leigh Bodden. Expect Pennington to throw the pigskin more than handoff the football than he did last week against Detroit.
The Jets special teams will be tested this week against the strong point of the Browns which is their punt blocking and limiting yards on punt returns. K Ben Graham will have to one-up the kicking game, as he is ranked 14th in the NFL with 37 yards per kick. Kerry Rhodes, Brad Smith, and punt returner Justin Miller will be key players in the football game getting the Jets yardage.
Make big plays on defense against a struggling Browns QB in Romeo Crennel and the Jets will be way on their way to a victory.
