It was a battle of 2 teams with a combined record of 2-20 coming into this afternoon's battle in Miami, when the Jets took on the Dolphins.
The Jets took the lead on the first drive of the game marching 12 plays, 84 yards in 6:02 minutes, capped by a Leon Washington 18 yard TD run. Jay Feely hit on a 53 yard field goal to make the score 7-3 at the end of the first quarter.
They traded field goals in the second quarter, and then there was a possibly momentum changing play around the mid point of the quarter. Kellen Clemens was hit and fumbled into the air, Michael Lehan picked it out of the air and took it the distance, 43 yards to give the Dolphins a 13-10 lead. However this was the last lead the Dolphins would see. Clemens responded by leading the team right back on a 7 play 56 yard drive that ended in a 19 yard TD pass to Brad Smith, putting the Jets up 17-13 and they never looked back.
They finally put the game out of early in the fourth quarter when Thomas Jones finally earned his first rushing TD of the year, scoring from one yard out with 14:21 to go, putting them up 30-13. A field goal and a second Leon Washington TD put the game at 40-13, marking the first time the Jets have put up 40 points or better since 2004.
The big story hear was turnovers, Miami had 5, including 3 INTs by John Beck. When you give the ball to the other team that many times, it makes it difficult to make a serious run. Kellen Clemens was more efficient today, going 15-24 for 236 yards, one TD and one INT. The two-headed running attack of Thomas Jones and Leon Washington was effective, Jones going 24 carries 75 yards and 1 TD, while Washington added 10 carries for 68 yards and 2 scores. Laveranues Coles led the receiving corp with 5 catches for 69 yards. David Harris on defense had another big game, with 8 tackles, a forced fumble and a sack. Mike Nugent was 4-4 in field goal attempts.
Next week, the Jets return home to face the Cleveland Browns.
