Jets 1-0 Patriots 0-1

Dear Roger Goodell,

Catching the New England Patriots cheating this week has me really concerned, and I hope you nip this behavior in the bud immediately. I’m an avid sports fan and have witnessed some embarrassing moments in the NBA and MLB this summer:

• Barry Bonds broke the most coveted record in baseball by cheating his way into the record books and stealing Hank Aaron’s home run record.

•In the NBA, a pipsqueak referee fixed games by calling ridiculous fouls while officiating.

What did the NBA and MLB do to fix these problems? Nothing significant to assure fans this type of behavior will never happen again. This is your opportunity to lay down the law and prevent this type of cheating in the future. You can penalize the Patriots to assure neither it nor any other team will repeat this behavior.

I’ve heard rumors you might strip the team of a draft pick or two and fine the front office. This is not harsh enough. Would it really prevent teams from cheating?

·When a team is one victory away from reaching the playoffs, a draft pick means little.

·The San Diego Chargers didn’t want all its draft picks last year. Would this penalty really harm a loaded team?

•Does a fine really hurt a team if it continues to receive revenue in the playoffs?

The only action to prevent cheating and to gain faith from your loyal NFL fans is to forfeit the Patriots game against the Jets.

The following list includes why you should take this action and how such games should be designated in the record books:

• It was only week one in the NFL season. The Patriots can easily rebound and reach their potential and the playoffs this season.

• The Patriots had been warned about this type of action before. It’s not like you’re punishing it for a first-time offense and with no warning.

·There is no way any other team will try this type of cheating if it knows it will cost a game. It won’t happen again.

•The game statistics and score will remain the same. The only difference will be the win-loss result.

Mr. Goodell, taking this action will show you really care about the integrity of the sport. Fans will applaud you and will know this type of behavior will never happen again. Please make the correct decision and assure the fans of football’s future.

Sincerely,

Chris Fry

Draft picks mean a lot to the Patriots and to every other team. It's a much harsher penalty than one would think. I think it should be up to 3 picks, and a suspension for Belichick, but forfeiting a game is an incredibly harsh punishment. When was the last time the NFL made a team forfeit a game after the fact?

Not really. Where the Patriots are likely to pick anyway it won't hurt that much. How many Pats picks even made the team this year.

I agree. This whole thing of forfeiting a game is getting to be ridiculous. The taping had nothing to do with the result of the game. Would everyone be clamoring for the same result to happen if, say, a very blatant passing interference was committed in the end zone in a one-point game but wasn't called? It's not a strict comparison but that no-call has a direct impact on the results of the game. The same cannot be said of this Tape-Gate.

I agree completely, I mean New England won by 24. It's hard to pin a blowout like that on a couple of plays where the tapes could have really affected the outcome of the game. I am not condoning what Bellichick did, but watching Moss and Brady tear up the Jets defense had more to do with their greatness on the field than knowing what kind of signals New York likes to use.

While NE clearly outplayed the Jets, it is hard to say that such great offense has nothing to do with the fact that they knew what the defensive plays were going to be. Still, we ALL know a forfeit is not going to happen.

Even though I wish I didn't have to be the one to quote Sean Salisbury, when he said on ESPN Radio, "Let's not down play the amount of preparation these players put in before a game", I have to agree with him. Tape Gate put aside, Tom Brady and Randy Moss are superstar players and it would be a disservice to both of them to not consider that these guys need opposing teams's defensive signals to play as well as they did. PS - I'm not saying that it couldn't help either player, but these guys are professionals.

Subtract not from that second sentence and it should make more sense.

I cannot see how people think the Patriots, a now 13-0 team, can possibly benifit from gaining any info from a 3-10 team. Most trolls do not see outside the box, and I have heard sportscasters (yes the ones who labeled the Pats as 'cheaters', not the NFL) that it was very possible they got caught so easily as to prevent teams they will ultimately play inthe postseason from gaining any unfair information. A 13-0 team getting useful info from a 3-10 team...no. But a team that will face the Pats in the postseason getting something may have been worth the 750K.
