Jet Fans at Today's Game: SHAME ON YOU!!

by Alanschech

I have been a Jet fan for a long time. And we have been through some tough times, I don't have to tell any of you this. However, I was watching the game today, and saw as we all did when Chad Pennington went down with an injury to his ankle, and I have one thing to say. To all of you who cheered when he fell, and despite any claims to the contrary, you did. The ovation rose as he fell, and the ovation went higher when the backup Kellen Clemens came into the game. To all of you that were guilty, and most of you were, SHAME ON YOU!!

First of all, to question the leadership, toughness, or anything about Chad Pennington is 100, no make that 1000% misinformed. You all can say whatever you like about his arm strength, that Clemens has more, that Pennington doesn't have a gun...etc. I DON'T CARE!!!

Let's think back on the career of a guy that you all continue to knock. How's about 2002, he comes in for Vinny, leads us to a division championship. He then leads the 41-0 destruction of the Colts. I am sure that all of you were singing his praises then.

Let's fast forward to the year 2004. We all know what happened, Pennington hurts his shoulder, round 1. But then, he returns during the season, and with that torn rotator cuff, leads us past the San Diego Chargers in the wild card game, and then takes us within a field goal 2 separate times of the Championship game. WITH A TORN ROTATOR CUFF! This is definitely a guy to rip folks! Let's cheer when he's injured. (Sarcasm noted I hope)

Then 2005, he hurts it again versus the Jacksonville Jaguars. Then again, even with a torn rotator cuff, comes BACK INTO THE GAME, and nearly throws the winning touchdown pass! This is the guy that you all cheered the injury of today folks!

2006, plays the entire season, leads our Jets to a 10-6 record, and earns the Comeback Player of the Year award. Then quickly fast forward to today, where he injures his ankle, MANY OF YOU CHEER, and what does he do? He comes back, with enough tape around his ankle to make a new foot, clearly hobbling, and leads the team on a picture perfect drive for a touchdown.

Chad Pennington has done nothing but prove himself a leader, a gamer and whether you like it or not, THE ONLY QUARTERBACK ON THE ROSTER THAT IS GOING TO LEAD OUR JETS ANYWHERE! Give him a break, stop knocking him, and please don't cheer when he gets hurt. He has done more than enough to earn your respect.

I agree that fans definitely cheered Pennington's injury however keep in mind that it was just a small sample of Jets fans lacking in class. Furthermore, Pennington going back on the field and continuing to play was one of the gutsiest (sp?) performances I've seen in quite sometime. Quite admirable.

And his numbers were quite good until he got hurt. What, 12-for-16 or something. Pennington also was instrumental in me winning my fantasy league in 2002.

It's always good to see a shout out for Seinfeld....but I would like to point out that although the Jets reside in NJ, they are certainly an NY team...maybe, 'Long Islanders are stupid' would have been a more accurate statement describing Jets fans.

Fans cheering THEIR OWN GUY getting hurt? Ugh, makes me sick. And I thought Eagle fans cheering Irvin when he got hurt was low ... Chad Pennington deserves better than that.

The Jets fans that booed embarrassed the entire Jets organization, almost as much as Joe Namath did a few years ago.

Btw, it is sad, I had the feeling that Jet fans aren't too big of Pennington fans, but it is still saddening. But I ask this, the next time (if this year) Pennington throws for 300 yards and 4 touchdowns, will Jet fans be cheering?

Jets fans have a chip on their shoulder and are a fickle bunch of women when it comes to deciding who should play for their team

What's sad was that Pennington was the only Jet who was playing well yesterday (with the possible exception of Laveranues Coles). The defense couldn't get any kind of pass rush going, the secondary got picked apart, the running game was dead, and the poor play of the offensive line was a huge red flag. If Jets fans think that benching Pennngton for the kid Kellen Clemens, they're deluding themselves. Alan is 100% right that booing Pennington showed Jets fans have no class. But it also makes me wonder if they know anything about football.

Well, they do routinely boo bad draft choices, which makes me think they know something about football.

I think Jets fans boo every draft choice, no matter what. Although in fairness, in a span of eight years the Jets passed up a chance to take the all-time leading passer, rusher, and receiver -- each time taking another player at the same position. In 1990, they passed on Emmitt Smith to take Blair Thomas. In 1985 they passed on Jerry Rice to pick Al Toon, and in 1983 they passed on Dan Marino to select Ken O'Brien. They may never be able to make up for those gaffes.

I wonder if Mike Tannenbaum was cheering too. Teams that care about their quarterback are willing to spend a little dough to protect them. Letting Kendall go was criminal and the direct result is Pennington's sprained ankle.

I was at the game. They were not cheering Pennington's injury. They were cheering the announcement "Now in at QB, Kellen Clemens." It is still an unnecessary insult to CP, but it is very different from cheering his injury.

Don't kid yourself, I could hear the cheers start as soon as Pennington went down.

It didn't happen. There was actually a collective groan. The cheering was most certainly because Clemens was coming in.

Great article. There is no place for negative rooting, when it is a good play you cheer, and on an injury, keep it shut. This person that wrote this article has much passion and knows his information. I read many of his articles before. I wonder if he writes for a magazine. Nice work.
