[edit] Biography

Jesse Burkett (Jesse Cail Burkett) was born on December 4, 1868 in Wheeling, West Virginia. He made his Major League debut on April 22, 1890 for the New York Giants. In 1890, his rookie year, he hit .309 with 4 home runs and 60 RBI. Burkett played for the New York Giants, Cleveland Spiders, St. Louis Perfectos, St. Louis Cardinals, St. Louis Browns and Boston Americans over the course of his 16 year career.

There is some disagreement on what was Jesse Burkett's most productive season. Some believe that it was 1896, when he stole 34 bases, hit for a .410 average and knocked in 72 runs. However, others believe that it was 1895, when he stole 41 bases, hit for a .409 average and knocked in 83 runs.

Burkett was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1964.
