Jerry Mertens (Jerome William Mertens) was born on January 5, 1936 in Racine, Wisconsin. After going to high school at St. Catherine (Racine, WI), Mertens attended Drake University. Mertens made his professional debut in the NFL in 1958 with the San Francisco 49ers. He played for the San Francisco 49ers for his entire 7 year career.

Most people believe that 1959 was Jerry Mertens's best year, as he ran back an interception for a touchdown.
