Biography[]
Born on July 2, 1980 in Laurel, Mississippi, Jermaine Van Buren (Jermaine Russell Van Buren) played for the Chicago Cubs and Boston Red Sox over the course of his 2 year career. Van Buren broke into the bigs on August 31, 2005 with the Chicago Cubs.
Van Buren has a fastball that sits in the 90-92 mph range that he locates well. He has a slider that's even better. He also throws a changeup. He's confident on the mound, but sometimes he is not aggressive enough and sometimes has problems repeating his delivery. He doesn't have the stuff to be an elite closer, but he could probably do well in middle relief if given the chance.
Van Buren was shipped off to the Red Sox before the 2006 season because the Chicago Cubs needed to make room on their 40 man roster. Boston only had to give up Matt Ciaramella, an outfielder that we'll probably never hear from again. Van Buren also spent a year in the independat leagues in 2003 after being released by the Colorado Rockies, the team that drafted him out of high school.
Van Buren lead the Cubss system in saves in both 2004 and 2005. He also made 6 appearances for the big league club in '05.
