Jeremy Wariner closing in on 400m world record

by Dicekmania

Jeremy Wariner became the 3rd fastest 400m runner of all-time yesterday with his 43.50 (personal best) run in Stockholm, Sweden at the DN Galan meet. With his performance, he now has the fastest time in the world by over .5 seconds. Wariner is the odds on favorite to win the Gold at the World Championships in Osaka, Japan later this month. The winner of the race was in question coming off the final turn, as fellow American LaShawn Merritt was even with Wariner coming off the final turn into the home stretch, but in typical Wariner fashion he pulled away with ease in the last 80 meters. The 43.50 time is the 6th fastest of all-time behind the legendary Michael Johnson and Butch Reynolds, both held the world record, with Johnson being the current record holder. Johnson and Wariner have close ties, as Johnson is his agent. Besides that connection both went to college at Baylor and have been coached by the greatest 400m coach in history, Clyde Hart. Wariner has his eyes set on running faster in Osaka, believing he can run 43.3 or faster. His confidence is riding high, after running only his third 400m race of 2007, he has run mainly 200m races up until this month. Wariner's time of 43.50 broke the existing meet record, for his efforts he was awarded a diamond, valued at $10k.

Wariner has been dominant in this race for so long now, but he doesn't get a lot of attention, for some reason. Good to some track talk on here.

Yeah but is he really the third fastest when Michael Johnson has posted four times that are faster than his.

Johnson is amazing. 14 of the top 21 times, including the #1 and four of the top 5.

Well, he is the third fastest human ever. No one will deny MJ is the greatest 400m runner of all-time. Even if Wariner breaks his record one day, he still has a long way to go to approach the dominance the MJ had.

Although MJ is my all time favourate athlete, Jeremy Wariner is a much better 400m runner. He is still young and I can't see him not breaking 43 seconds. I think Jeremy will end his career as the number one 400m runner ever and I don't think that his times will ever be beaten, as the 400m is one event that hasn't moved in 40 years. Lee Evens already posted 43.68 in 1968.

I think Jeremy will improve his 200m to about 19.80 over the next 5 years and will keep his differential under 3 seconds in conversion to a 400m time. I think at age 28 or 29 he will do a life time best world record of about 42.55e. That time will most probably never be beaten.
