John Jay Berwanger, born on March 19, 1914 in Dubuque, Iowa, became the inaugural recipient of the Downtown Athletic Club (DAC) Trophy, renamed the Heisman Memorial Trophy the following year, in 1935. Berwanger was the star player at the University of Chicago under legendary head coach Amos Alonzo Stagg.
Berwanger also became the first ever player drafted into the NFL, taken by the Philadelphia Eagles with the first pick of the 1936 NFL Draft. However, Berwanger chose not to pursue a professional football career, opting instead to become a sportswriter.
