Javy Lopez to Boston

13

ESPN is reporting that Javy Lopez has cleared waivers and will be traded to the Boston Red Sox tomorrow. The Baltimore Orioles C/DH is having a down year and is not a regular starter for the O's, but will be a temporary replacement for the injured Jason Varitek.

Wow, that's an expensive temp. Not much better than Mirebelli(sp?), either.

Lopez is definitely better than Mirabelli. He can at least keep his OBP over .300.

Lopez is so much better than Mirabelli, it's not even funny! What are you smoking CPCP?

For the price ratio, he's not that much of an upgrade. (Although that doesn't matter to Boston all that much.)

This deal is a step in the right direction for Boston, but they need to do something else if they want to beat the Yankees for the AL East Crown.

I'm a little worried about relying on this guy regularly as a catcher, even if it's only 3 or 4 of every five games.

Maybe he could play first and let Youk slide over to third once in a while.

Unfortunatley there aren't many other options. He could get hot with the stick in Fenway and provide some relief as a backstop.

The Red Sox are doing this so they can have the first all-Javy Lopez battery.

the Gregg Olson - Greg Olson 1990 all-star battery will always be the best (Although I loved it every time Marquis Grissom went yard off of Jason Marquis)

You did....wow....where did you say that Boston was going to claim Javy Lopez off waivers from Baltimore? I guessed I missed that little nugget of wisdom. Was it in code?

Even at his price tag, I'm surprised he cleared waivers.

You're always right, X! It WAS in code (to you) when I wrote "ever heard of waivers". Guess you've heard of them now.

I had heard of them, actually. It was amazing, but that article wasn't *about waivers*, so I didn't mention it. Funny how that works. So what, I have to mention everything I know in every article I ever write? That would make them rather lengthy. Ahh, so you didn't see them signing Javy Lopez coming, you were just being a wiseass again. Got it, thanks for the clarification. :-)

Your article was about 'Theo standing pat'... I think pulling waiver trades off would qualify as Theo NOT standing pat. You jumped the gun on calling the Theo & the BoSox out for doing nothing. And it seems they're not done yet...just face it, you don't know crap about anything

Could someone please explain to me what the "trading deadline" really means in MLB, when low budget teams keep sending their good players to high budget teams after the "deadline." Would have been nice if the Miami Heat could have 'acquired' Paul Pierce off waivers in April, or if the Pittsburgh Steelers could have 'acquired' Larry Fitzgerald in January. And why does anyone take the competitiveness of this league seriously?

That kind of stuff does happen in other sports. There's been several times in the NBA, most recently with Gary Payton that a team trades a player than the team that got the player put them on waivers to that the team that traded them in the first place can have them back. Two seasons ago GP was traded to Atlanta, Atlanta put him on waivers so Boston could take him back. It's a salary clearing move for Atlanta and Boston got to the playoffs because of it. It's a lot shadier than the MLB waiver trades.

Since when is Javy Lopez at this stage in his career comparable to Fitz or Paul Pierce???
