The Giants do not appear worried at all about overworking Schmidt. He has been a workhorse since 2002, although a groin injury hurt his ERA last year. Schmidt is 33 years old and had an arm injury a couple years ago. In 2006, he has gotten off to a rough start (5.33 ERA/ 17:16 K:BB/ 5.7 K/9 10.0 K/9 in 2004). Still, Felipe Alou has not been scared away by these warning signs. In his first four starts, Schmidt has recorded pitch counts of 117, 114, 121, and 109. If Schmidt breaks down and Bonds keeps limping around, then this Giants team is toast.
