The American League officially declares itself a major league. The National League, already in place, refused to acknowledge the junior circuit as a threat, but a "war" over players quickly began.

International Olympic Committee Vice-President Kim Un-yong is arrested on charges of corruption in Seoul. Prosecutors arrest Kim minutes after an arrest warrant is issued by the Seoul District Court, and the 72-year-old was put behind bars after his pre-trial detention was approved.
