Ducky Holmes (James William Holmes) was born on January 28, 1869 in Des Moines, Iowa. He made his Major League debut on August 8, 1895 for the Louisville Colonels. In 1895, his rookie year, he hit .373 with 3 home runs and 20 RBI. Holmes played for the Louisville Colonels, New York Giants, St. Louis Perfectos, Baltimore Orioles, Detroit Tigers, Washington Senators and Chicago White Sox over the course of his 10 year career.

Most people believe that Ducky Holmes's best season was 1899, when he stole 50 bases, hit for a .320 average and knocked in 66 runs.
