Jim Donnelly (James B. Donnelly) was born on July 19, 1865 in New Haven, Connecticut. He made his Major League debut on August 11, 1884 for the Indianapolis Blues. In 1884, his rookie year, he hit .254 with 0 home runs and 0 RBI. Donnelly played for the Indianapolis Blues, Detroit Wolverines, Kansas City Cowboys, Washington Senators, St. Louis Browns, Columbus Colts, Baltimore Orioles, Pittsburgh Pirates, New York Giants and St. Louis Perfectos over the course of his 11 year career.

Most people believe that Jim Donnelly's best season was 1896, when he stole 38 bases, hit for a .328 average and knocked in 71 runs.

  • Sold by Indianapolis (Western) to Detroit Wolverines with Chub Collins, Jim Keenan, Larry McKeon, Gene Moriarity, Dan Casey, Sam Crane, Deacon McGuire and Sam Thompson for $4000 (only $2000 paid due to dispute) (June 15, 1885).
  • Sold by Detroit Wolverines to Kansas City Cowboys (1886).
  • Granted to league by Kansas City Cowboys with Charley Bassett, Fatty Briody, Mert Hackett, Silver King, Al Myers, Paul Radford, Jim Whitney and Stump Wiedman (March 9, 1887).
