Born on November 25, 1895 in Youngsville, North Carolina, Jakie May (Frank Spruiell May) played for the St. Louis Cardinals, Cincinnati Reds and Chicago Cubs over the course of his 14 year career. May broke into the bigs on June 26, 1917 with the St. Louis Cardinals, and put up a 3.83 ERA in 152.2 innings pitched in 1918, his rookie year.

There is some disagreement on what was Jakie May's most productive season. Some believe that it was 1927, when he posted a 3.51 ERA, won 15 games and struck out 121 batters. However, others believe that it was 1926, when he posted a 3.22 ERA, won 13 games and struck out 103 batters.
