Jake Gibbs

Jake Gibbs (Jerry Dean Gibbs) was born on November 7, 1938 in Grenada, Mississippi. He made his Major League debut on September 11, 1962 for the New York Yankees. In 1966, his rookie year, he hit .258 with 3 home runs and 20 RBI. Gibbs played for the New York Yankees for his entire 10 year career.
Gibbs was also an All American quarterback for Ole Miss, starting on two of the best Rebel teams in history, the 1959 team which scored 350 points and gave up only 21 losing only to LSU on Billy Cannon's famous Halloween night punt return, a loss they avenged in the Sugar Bowl with a 21-0 victory behind 2 TD passes by Gibbs. Gibbs senior season in 1960, he quarterbacked the Rebels to an undefeated season, a second Sugar Bowl victory and a share of the National Championship.
After his retirement from the Yankees, Gibbs returned to Ole Miss and coached baseball for a number of seasons.
