Jaguars Name Garrard Starting QB, Cut Leftwich

by Davis21wylie

In a surprising about-face by the Jacksonville Jaguars' front office on Friday, ESPN reports that the team will name David Garrard their starting QB for the 2007 season, and will either trade or release erstwhile signal-caller Byron Leftwich. Leftwich had previously been named the team's starter this offseason after an injury-marred 2006 campaign, but Jags coach Jack Del Rio was apparently impressed with Garrard's development in camp and the preseason. It will be interesting to see where Leftwich lands; don't be surprised if he is snatched up by either Minnesota, Oakland, Kansas City, or Atlanta before the regular season.

word also is that the Jaguars are looking to acquire a veteran QB to back up Garrard and may be looking to Mark Brunell again.

This is shocking. I don't think he'll end up in Oakland since Culpepper, McCown, and Walter are there plus Russell (when he signs). My money would be on Minnesota or Atlanta. Possibly Tampa Bay since Gruden loves QBs.

How is anyone surprised at this? The only reason Leftwich took any snaps at all last year is because of his salary. Garrard totally outplayed Leftwich the last two years when "Lefty" was hurt, I think this is a good move. The team now knows going into the season who the starter is, instead of it being a game time decision like it was the last seven weeks of last year. And another (probably meaningless) thought. I'm in two fantasy leagues, one with 12 teams, the other with 14. Garrard was drafted in both, Leftwich was not. So some people at least had an idea.

Its a difficult decision that had to be made one way or another. One guy was always looking over his shoulder wondering when the other would play... Now it's Gerrards team and the Jags should be better off because of it.

I think he lands in Minnie or Atlanta, but don't be surprised if Buffalo wants a good wants a solid experienced back up. Washington could use a good back up, bascially any team that doesn't have 2 solid QBs on the roster will be looking at Leftwhich as a failsafe.

Buffalo won't waste the money on a brittle second string QB who lost his starting job, and didn't set the world on fire anyway in Jacksonville, posting a 20-20 mark in 45 career starts. With Craig Nall, and Trent Edwards, who had a solid preseason, Marv Levy would be loathe to hand out cash to a guy like Lefty.

Minnesota acquired Kelly Holcomb earlier in the week and also have Brooks Bollinger and a kid that they are high on who will probably be on the practice squad. I don't even see ATL going after him, they may be happy with Chris Redman as the #2 option.

Seattle was showing interest in Brunell, they may jump in the Lefty race.

I may be partly to blame for this - one of my aquarium residents (a danio named Fryling Leftwich) died right after I named him that...
