The Milwaukee Brewers, who are in desperate need of quality starting pitching, optioned Dana Eveland and Chris Mabeus to AAA Nashville and purchased the contracts of left-hander Zach Jackson and right-hander Allan Simpson.
Jackson, considered one of the top arms in the Brewers farm system, was acquired from Toronto in the Lyle Overbay trade this past winter. At Nashville, Jackson went 2-2 with a 3.00 ERA and a 1.33 WHIP ratio in 57 innings pitched. Jackson could make his major league debut on Wednesday when Eveland's spot in the rotation comes up against the San Diego Padres.
Eveland struggled in five starts for the Brewers this season, including Friday's 10-4 loss to the Washington Nationals. He was 0-3 with an 8.51 ERA.
Brewer pitching has been well under par as a result of working without injured starters Ben Sheets and Tomo Ohka and a possible backup starter in Rick Helling. Helling is expected to return from the DL in the next two weeks.
