After two months of uncertainty as to whether or not Milwaukee Brewers Shortstop J.J. Hardy would return from a May 16 ankle injury, the Brewers announced today that Hardy would undergo season-ending surgery in Milwaukee.
Hardy suffered a sprained ankle sliding into Philadelphia Phillies catcher Sal Fasano. The sprain aggravated a loose peroneal tendon, believed by team doctors to be a pre-existing condition. Initially, Hardy was placed on the 15-day DL while he worked on recovering. However, the loose tendon routinely snapped painfully in and out of place, keeping him off the field.
After debating the issue for the last couple weeks, Hardy decided yesterday on the surgery, which will be performed in Milwaukee by Brewers head physician William Raasch. The recovery time is 3 to 4 months, so Hardy should be completely recovered in time for the 2007 season.
In his limited 2006 season, the 23-year-old Hardy posted the following numbers:
.242 AVG, .295 OBP, .398 SLG, 31 H, 5 2B, 5 HR, 14 RBI, 13 R, and 1 SB in 35 games.
One of those Home Runs was a part of the 5-HR inning the Brewers posted against the Cincinnati Reds on April 22.
