J.D. Drew Should Be Arrested For Impersonating Major League Player

I can see Scott Boras chuckling over how he pulled the wool over the Red Sox making them think J.D. Drew was actually going to play like a major league baseball player for them this season. It is a wonder Drew hasn't been arrested for impersonating a major league baseball player.

Red Sox are paying Drew $14.4 million for having a terrible season in which he is only 26 home runs behind the league leading Alex Rodriguez and 57 runs batted in behind Rodriguez who also leads the AL in that category.

Seven Red Sox players have more hits than Drew. Even Julio Lugo has more hits than Drew. Five Red Sox have more home runs than Drew. Six players on the team have more runs batted in than Drew and only has two more runs batted in than Coco Crisp. Eight Red Sox have more total bases than Drew.

He only has three players ahead of him in strikeouts about the only thing he has been good at this season. At mlb.com he is listed 14th on team in slugging among all players and is behind Dustin Pedroia, Alex Cora and Crisp. Seven regulars on the team have higher batting averages than Drew.

Six players have more extra base hits than Drew including Crisp and Pedroia. In other words the Red Sox have poured $14.4 million down the drain while paying Drew over a million dollars more than they are paying David Ortiz and Curt Schilling.

Players like Crisp making $3.8 million and Pedroia making the major league minimum salary of $380,000 are outplaying Drew who is showing he is not a money player except in the fact that he doesn't mind raking the money in but sure isn't earning it.

He should be ashamed to pick up his paycheck and should back up to the pay window wearing a mask hoping nobody recognizes his money grubbing hands.

I agree with you, as well as almost anyone else who has common sense involving money. JD Drew was definitely overpaid this season. He didn't do anything for the team EXCEPT in April. He was probably the best hitter in April for the Red Sox.

He's been overpaid since he got out of high school, the Ryan Leaf of MLB.

Went to the sox game last night... Let's just say, J.D. Drew didn't have at least one fan in the stands...

Oh, then they were all in Yawkey Way, right? Or maybe at home watching the game?

If Drew makes it to 500 at bats (and that's a big if); that means he makes about $30,000 per at bat! What a joke...

Theredking made a good point...it is ridiculous to pay players like Drew that kind of money for an at bat when a player like Dustin Pedroia who is hitting better than Drew is making less than a $1000 an at bat.

You'd have to have a pretty damn good farm system to contend while never signing any good free agents. The only players making money like Pedroia (under $1 million) are players in their first three years in the big leagues.

JuTM...thanks for the on the spot report of how fans are accepting Drew. Red Sox fans probably cheer more for Lugo than Drew. Never have liked Drew since he was too good to sign with Phillies so played independent baseball till he got on the Cardinals. Drew has played in more than 135 games twice in ten years and only twice has he had more than 90 runs batted in. He has batted over 500 times only once....more than 25 homers only twice...never had more than 158 hits in a season...Worst of all he has hit only .146 against the Yankees. Even worse Red Sox are stuck with him for four more years since he signed a $70 million contract for five years. Red Sox would be better off to have signed Sammy Sosa than this clown.

Here's an interesting stat: JD Drew's career OPS+ is actually higher than Sosa's. It doesn't really mean anything for the purposes of this discussion, but it's still interesting...

To be honest...people were relatively ambivilent to drew...I was really being a jerk out there...but there were some white sox fans behind me and some poor red sox fan, who finally asked, "what's the deal" and i told him about the whole Philly connection...then they all got it

can't argue with you about how poor Drew has been but is this really surprising? i think just about everyone knew (save for Epstein) that it was a bad deal as soon as it was announced. i dunno if people predicted it would be this bad, but hey at least he's healthy...

Never a good thing to have Alex Cora ahead of you in slugging. Nice work on researching Drew's productivity (or lack thereof) and casting light on what a sham he really is. A good deal of talent, of course, but more trouble than he's worth.

Drew's OPS has gone down from 1.005 in 2004 to .932 to .891 to .756 this season and slugging percentage has gone down from .569 in 2004 to .520 to .498 to .391 this season not exactly the numbers of a player being paid $14.4 million this season.

If this guy ever starting caring he would be an RBI machine. That however is not reality and in fact he is an example of why some people despise baseball. A subpar athlete who is subpar because that's what he wants to be and receives a paycheck for just showing up.

Drew is a money player in the worst sense of the word and you can tell he is like a robot going through the motions so he can get his $14.4 million this year. Scott Boras should be banned from being an agent after talking Red Sox into signing this bum.

I wonder who hates JD Drew more right now, Philly fans or Boston fans? I would have to give the edge to Philly since they are the most bitter sports fans in the country (probably rightfully so)

good for the red sox I say...I can't see any place better than boston for someone who sucks as bad as Drew...good thing they left the Yanks have Damon so they could fill an outfield spot with that guy...lose a few more games...we're only 7.5 back
