Alright making World Series predictions in June can at best be described as premature yes, but after yesterday's Mets loss I couldn't be more confident. The irony in that huh? The final score of yesterdays game won't really matter on the way to a championship season for the Mets. What will matter is the consistency that Oliver Perez has begun to throw strikes with. Perez was dubbed a project from his inception into the league with the Pittsburgh Pirates, however a project with much promise. The Pirates envisioned him as their cornerstone pitcher, the ace of their franchise for years to come, the only thing they couldn't do was untap that potential.
Cue in Rick Peterson. Peterson is known throughout the game for his odd analogies, his strong belief in psychology, yoga, meditation and so on. But no matter how he approaches his job he gets it done time in and time out. Oliver Perez is the latest example. Now the Mets not only have another quality pitcher to the rotation but another guy with ace-like stuff.
Basically the Mets rotation which was dubbed their Achilles heel by most critics is one of the most formidable in the league. With the likes of Tom Glavine, Orlando Hernandez, John Maine and Oliver Perez on any given night any of the four can go out and pitch like an ace. All have proven this.
Cue in Pedro Martinez who says he feels as good as ever, vintage Pedro throwing 230 feet on flat ground. With a formidable bullpen this Mets team will be hard to beat come crunch time. Pitching wins championships this has been proven time and time again. We have the pitching what about the offense? Some people worried in the beginning of the year as David Wright got off to a slow start that he isn't really the player we all think he is. Alright throw that idea out the window.
Carlos Delgado? He's old, hes washed up, he can't turn on the fastball any more echoed throughout the internet, and papers as he too started off slow. Delgado has been on a tear as of late and now is tied with David Wright with 8 home runs, as Willie said he will finish where he does every year 30 and 100. Not to mention Willie Randolph in his 3rd season as an MLB manager has found a way to press all the right buttings using his talented bench accordingly.
But this Mets team isn't built for just 2007, this Mets team is built to be a force in the National League for years to come. We all know about Jose Reyes, and David Wright enough said. Add to that Carlos Gomez, Oliver Perez, John Maine, Mike Pelfrey, Philip Humber, Lastings Milledge if he ever gets his act together and Fernando Martinez.
The only thing sweeter than seeing the Mets in such a promising position is seeing the Mets win day in and day out while watching the Yankees and there $200 million payroll embarrassed night in and night out.
