Its Getting Closer... Walker's Rants are Right Around the Corner.

by BigPPup

Another week has come to an end.  The playoff hunt is hotter than ever, NFL preseason is kicking into high gear and Mike Vick’s future is growing ever dimmer.  Luckily the future for Walker’s Rants is as bright as ever.  That being said, let’s get this party started.  Walker’s Rants are a go.

Football season is so close I can almost smell it....

Notice how often Bonds is cranking homeruns out the park now and we just don’t care?

Eli Manning will show his true colors this season. That means he will prove to be the least talented member of the family....

Culpeper still has something left in the tank, Russell better get to work soon or be left behind....

All the injuries from the past weekend prove why Pre-Season football is overrated....

Did anyone see the Cowboys dismantle the Broncos?  Now can they carry that over to the regular season?

Its okay Washington D.C. exhale, Jason Campbell only bruised his knee....

That damn Santana is amazing 17 K’s....

The USA better Qualify for the Olympics in basketball....

Browns fans don’t go crazy just yet; it was a preseason game against the Lions....

4 leagues, 4 teams, 1 goal: dominate fantasy football....

Are we at the point that we can consider Johnny Damon a Yankee bust?  I think yes, because of the money....

That Roger Federer is pretty good, shame nobody is watching....

I wanted to see the Nat’s acquire talent… Willie Mo is not what I had in mind....

Clinton Portis may be the most overrated RB in football.  It’s been a long time since those 1600 yard days in Denver....

England and France getting into a punch-up during a Test match?  This is going to be a good World Cup....

For as much as I love the NFL, there is just something special about watching a High School game on Friday Night....

Mike Vick plead guilty and go to jail now, at least try to save some of your career....

Well done Smoltzy all time strikeout leader for the Braves....

Don’t look now Red Sox fans, the Yanks are coming....

Well, happy tears because the NFL season is almost here. And then, when I read the end, that was when I changed emotions.

I give Eli two years with another head coach. If he still sucks, THEN I will consider him a bust.

Yeah, learning under coughlin is not ideal...he needs a coach to coddle him (like Dungy in Indy)...Eli, IMO, doesn't seem to respond to a drill sergent-esque coach, and he's probably better off with a players coach

well that, and the fact that coughlin is a complete jackass

exactly, Eli should be awesome once they switch QB's. I think the second half slumps are because Coughlin overworks them all year and they get so freakin tired and they just stop caring.

Agreed but I just wonder since he spent his first 3 years under Coughlin if he can ever get it back. Ramsey could have been a solid NFL QB but 2 yrs under Spurrier and the boy is scared to stand in the pocket now.

I love the "Duck and Chuck" offense spurrier runs...the fact that it has never worked in the NFL and yet he still thinks it is good...well that's just awesome

Honestly, I think the Coughlin situation is gonna be great for him. He's being coached by a jackass who overworks his players so when he gets a new head coach that is more lax, he's gonna be zooming all over the field.

Spurrier's offense is ingenius in collge when you can consitantly get the best athletes to run it, and teams dont run complex zone blitz schemes. The Fun and gun offense is where its at. Its also very effective in Madden.

hence the "duck and chuck" (as Buddy Ryan would refer to it)...an offense so oblivious to blitzing that the QB literally has to duck and chuck...the ball...

True well thats what happens when you swear you can block with only 5 players. The best way to combat that is to blitz heavy. I will say though Spurrier had some of the best sound bites as an NFL coach and he is missed for that.

"Did anyone see the Cowboys dismantle the Broncos? Now can they carry that over to the regular season? "

You know its the pre-season right? The eagles got crushed by the Ravens and then dismantled the panthers...it means jack-squat...

Its a baseball conspiracy...the yankees will be in the playoffs...

Agreed on both points. Didn't the Colts go 0-4 last season in the preseason or something?

Of Course I know its the preseason thats why I said can they carry that over because if they cant then it doesnt matter.

When I watch pre season football I am looking for a couple of things. First) I want to see continuity in the offense. Meaning I want the 1's to get in solid reps and move the ball effectivly. Same can be said for the D.

Second) I want to see the pups. I want to see how they are developing and coming along and if they will be able to step in when an injury occurs.

Exactly...i mean, games are decided in the 3rd and 4th quarter...when the scrubs play...its all being an individual for those plays (because you're trying to make the team)... I mean, Eagles beat writers asked reid about the ass-whooping they got from the ravens and he flat out told them he didn't gameplan what so ever...

Agreed, here in DC the Skins are 1 and 1 and they were dominated in the first game they played and they won it because of a crappy fourth qt drive.

Exactly my point, whoever puts there stars in preseason games is a dumbass. And if their star gets injured because of it, they deserved it. Ridiculous to do something like that.

Now, i've never been in a football pre-season before, but i'd imagine that the "rust" LT would shake off, would only be getting used to hitting again, cutting, etc...I don't think he needs much pre-season action because he probably gets the same action in practice... Well, that and if he hasn't needed preseason action since 2005, why bother now?

True but some players need the reps. Jason Cambell for the Skins got hurt on Saturday and he needed to get the reps in as a young QB

Perhaps Insan...but what about a guy like McNabb...i think you need him to play a little to get into a groove...and guys like the 0line, because they rarely all stay together (and its a big deal when they do)...none the less, you need to give them a little time to gel...

Well yea, I wouldn't exactly call Campbell a star. I'm talking guys like Peyton, LDT, Brady, Ray Lewis, Steve Smith, etc...

I wouldn't even put McNabb in. Why bother risking it. He's shown me what he can do. He has a great resume. The rust will shake off in practice and his chance of getting injured then is minimal.

Well, Peyton needs to feel out Anthony Gonzalez, Brady getting used to...pretty much all his receivers, and steve smith getting used to whoever is the starting QB for the panthers (it changes week to week)

its more than that...McNabb needs to know he can do it...coming back from a serious injury, he needs to get back on the field and get a feel for it again...its been almost a year...

He did play friday...took a sack too

But everytime he gets wrapped up around the legs, we'll all cringe...unless he breaks the tackle...which he's done before...remember that long pass to mitchell on monday night against the cowboys...sick play...just sick

Exactly and I hate to say it but for the most part QB's fall into that catagory especially the scramblers. They cant get into a groove in practice when they are in a red jersey and not getting hit. They need that actual rush.

Yeah its always difficult to break a QB back in after getting banged up. Kinda one of those deals there's only one way to do it.

I love the second half of pre-season games. 99% of these guys won't make the cut. That means in a month they'll be busing my table at Applebee's.

Good work! I really like a couple of your baseball points here.

1) It's really interesting just how irrelevant Barry Bonds' HRs have gotten since 756.

2) Johnny Damon is a MASSIVE bust. But only on the Yankees' (and maybe the Red Sox)roster does a $13M/yr bust fly under the radar!
