Italy VS Germany: Why America Hates Soccer

by user Wtt02005

It was a very contested matchup throughout. In the words of Rasheed Wallace, both teams played hard. After ninety minutes of regulation, the score was still 0-0, forcing the teams to go to a fifteen minute overtime. As expected, they had to play a second overtime where Italy scored its first goal in the second to last minute. Having played their best defense yet finding themselves down a point, the demoralized Germans practically conceding another goal to lose 0-2 to Team Italia.

In any other sport, the close game would be exciting...BECAUSE THERE ARE POINTS ON THE BOARD. In basketball, teams trading buckets in crunch time has fans on the tip of their seats. In tennis, the two athletes slamming winners or hitting unforced errors send the crowd into "YEAHHHHH!!!" or "awww"

Though a very exciting finish, it really was not worth the 119 minutes I had just watched. I found myself constantly flipping the channel to VH1, watching why Nick and Jessica broke up. And they broke up how long ago?

America just does not have the patience to watch a game where nothing happens. If someone did watch the game and missed the finish, that person was probabbly like "oh...whatever...time for Hogan Knows Best"

Were you watching the same game? Something did happen. Okay, nobody scored. But the manner it was played in, and the quality of play made it great. I'll try to convert it to NFL equivalancy. Each pass from one player is equivalent to a QB pass, whenever a player runs with the ball it is a rush, whenever he is tackled, obviously he is being tackled (but loses the ball usually). If you imagine that as an NFL scenario, you would find it interesting. I really have to do the soccer language deally...

Not even close...its much easier to pass in Fifa then it is to throw an NFL pass...same with rushing...

America hates soccer because america sucks at soccer. I did watch parts of hte game, and I thought it was a pretty well played game, much better skill players than the americans have, thats for sure!!!

The lack of scoring, the lack fo scoring opportunitie, the diving, the inability to know exactly when each half ends...these are the reasons why no one in the United States care about soccer.

OK, is NBA really more exciting simply because the score is 110-105 every night? Seriously, you don't even have to watch the first three quarters because they are meaningless; how often do you really want to watch kobe or ai isolate and take a pull-up jumper? And teams trading buckets in crunch time? Yeah, maybe in college hoops. If there's is a 3-10 pt lead during the last 3 minutes in nba, it takes like 30 as the losing team fouls. There is absolutely no strategy left in the nba game.

I love how everybody rips soccer, baseball and the ends of basketball games as 'too slow', but football gets a free pass when 98% of the 'action' is huddles, penalties, replays from 800 different angles and Peyton Manning screaming at deaf people with his hands.

Football will never be hated. Football can be slow, but there's a continuous clock most of the time. And you have to praise the hard work it takes to go from one end of the field to the other.

All this "why Americans hate soccer" stuff is getting idiotic. 20 million American kids play soccer every weekend. The World Cup ratings have been (taking the English- and Spanish-languiage broadcasts together) higher than the ratings for the NBA finals. [And just for good measure, the Italy-Germany game was terrific; millions of us, yes even here in America, were on the edges of our seats). You can hate soccer all you want -- but saying that "Americans hate soccer" is ringing less and less true every day.

america is in love with soccer. it's the typical "sports guys" that seem to hate it. but even Bill Simmons seems to be coming around after the article he wrote today. there are a lot of things about soccer i don't like (floppers that make manu look like a stoic), but that's true of a lot of sports.

Bill Simmons is also a Red Sox fan and Clippers season ticket holder. Have you seriously ever heard him talk??? You would NEVER take sports opinion seriously from him if you knew him - He's "Entertainment Guy" now... (I love you, Bill! - I turned into a lazy writer when I first had a kid, too)

Oh, I get it: Americans like basketball because they're "trading buckets," and tennis because they're trading winners and errors, but there's "not enough scoring" in soccer ... Thanks -- that really clears that up! If you think that Americans hate soccer (which, as several commenters have pointed out, is simply wrong, as a generalization), the question is: why are Americans different from all other people on the planet (save, for some reason, the Indians and Pakistanis)? It's not enough to say "there's not enough scoring" -- how come everyone else seems to adore the game even though there's not very much scoring?

One of the biggest barriers is that the best players don't play in the US. If Henry, Ronaldhido, and Beckham played in NY, Boston, and LA, people would go and watch. But when the best US player (Landon Donovan?) is an average player on the top World Cup squads, it's hard to get interested. You know you (the US) is a dog at best, and you have no personal rooting interest in the other players.

I am tired of this "America hates soccer" crap. America does not hate soccer. Some people find it interesting, some people are disinterested, I doubt anybody actually "hates" soccer. To be honest I tried to get into this game (Italy v. Germany.) I appreciate strategy, taking the time to set up a play and the excution of it. I like to think most of America does, since this is what football (American) is about. Many American's love a good pitcher's duel, or defensive basketball (which is why NCAA is liekd more than the NBA) and which also has me gaining more interest in the Bulls again. Anyway, back to my point, I tried to get into it, but couldn't because any time a team tried to excecute a fast break or get the ball near the goal some player when rolling to ground Nancy Kerrigan style. I can understand onece in awhile to gain an adavantage, fine, that happens in baseketball when a player tried to get a foul charge, but it happend probably 70% of the time. It slowed the game down and made me not want to watch the second half. This is why I am disinterested in soccer and probably the reason why most Americans don't watch it, but I don't think people actually "hate" the sport. I would be completely serious when I say that most Americans respect it and the athletes that play it, but what do I know, I am just one person.

then move to a country where they LOVE 'football' - there's like 298 OTHER countries to cheer for...this is America where we talk smack on our own dudes (soccer players, presidents, eat steak and willfully destroy the environment over the slimmest of profit margins...

But Manny, would you really go so far to say that you hate soccer or that you just don't care for it? I mean it seems a waste of time to get so emotionally involved in a sport you don't even care to watch and to say you hate expresses some kind of emotion. Did Pele kill your dog or something?
