It Is Wayne Rooney's Time

It's time for Wayne Rooney to establish himself among the world's best footballers. Wayne Rooney's power and skill have never been in question. He is a good striker. But good is not enough. It is time for Rooney to learn how to stay calm, play within himself, and realize his immense potential. If he does this, not only will he be regarded as one of the world's top players, but his team could be one for the ages.

The 2007-08 Manchester United squad has a chance to be truly special. The midfield is one of the Premiership's best, featuring reigning Player of the Year Cristiano Ronaldo, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Michael Carrick. Also joining the United midfield are incoming transfers, Anderson (Brazil) and Nani (Portugal). These talented youngsters could make an impact right away. As for the defense, the long-awaited addition of Owen Hargreaves, who will play defensive midfield, combined with a deep defensive corps filled with experienced players, like captain Gary Neville, Patrice Evra and Nemanja Vidic, and a world-class goal keeper like Edwin van der Sar should produce fantastic results.

The only question mark on the United roster is the lack of depth in a striker corps. In attack, the side features Rooney and the talented Louis Saha, with little depth behind them. The pair will be backed up by the likes of Alan Smith and the aging Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. In order for this side to realize its potential, the team's strikers will have to deliver consistently strong results. This undermanned group will need a very strong effort form each member. As the most talented of the group, the club will look to Rooney to anchor its attack. This is the year that Manchester United truly needs Wayne Rooney to take that next step and become a superstar.

United need tevez as smith is on his way out and saha's future also not certain.Rooney towards the end of last season was more on the sheet with assists and has learnt it to be a team game and is a real fighter. it should be united's year again.

I couldn't agree more. I should have addresssed the Tevez situation in some way in this article. I am working on a piece devoted entirely to the Tevez matter. Provided ManU can add him to the side in time for the start of the season, another Premiership title, and presumably considerable success in Europe, look to be very likely.

It will be interesting to see how a Tevez-Rooney partnership would work out. I think the problem is that they are both extremely similar players. They would probably still need someone in the hole to work from. However, they will play some beautiful football and it pains me to say it, but they have to be odds on favorite to win the title again this year, provided they stay healthy. On a semi-related tangent, why has England not realized that they have three uniquely talented players in J. Cole, Stevie Me, and Waz. How hard is it to play a striker up front, have those three work in just behind and then have two holding players in midfield?

What about Lampard, Gerrard and Carrick? For me Lampard should be the odd man out and a rotation between Gerrard and Carrick with Hargreaves or Ledly King in the defensive holding roll. But then you remember S. Wright Phillips and Lennon who add so much speed on the right side and the decision becomes even trickier.

I'd love to see Rooney step up, especially with Barcelona getting all this hype now after signing Henry...they probably deserve it though I think they could win it all next season

I think Barca have to be the favorite for La Liga and Champions League. I think its fair to say that they probably would have won La Liga this past season had they had a healthy Eto'o and Messi for an entire season. If you have those two back at full strength, and throw Henry into the mix as well as Deco etc. they should be lethal next year.

Call it a little bit of sour grapes, but if La Liga simply used goal differential, like every other top-flight league does, Barca would have won the title this past season. With Barca's improvements and Real, Valencia and Sevilla not making huge strides, this should be Barcelona's year.

Am I right in thinking that Ronaldo and Rooney scored the most goals of any patnership since Cole and Yorke? Rooney was not the main man in the headlines last year for united, but it could be argued that his influence was only eclipsed by Ronaldo's slightly. I think the way they played together on the pitch was a testament to both of their professionalim and Fergie's iron will after the incident last summer at the WC in the semi-finals. Ronaldo would not have been player of the year without young master Rooney working with him.

For united to win the silverware this year they will need goals from all over the pitch like we got last season.

I think your right in pointing out that he could've been more clinical in front of goal. The fact is he's just 21 and his peak is still 3 or 4 years off. Until then, I'll talke his intensity and drive in my starting 11 every Saturday.

I want to make it abundantly clear that I was not calling Wayne Rooney out for not being a good player. I just feel that with his power and natural ability, he should be on the short list of the world's best. And you're right, at just 21, he's got plenty of time, but I'd like to see him make the leap into the ranks of the truly elite players.

That would be awesome! As long as Barcelona lift the Champion League trophy at the end, I would LOVE to see that!

I don't know I can concede the champions league, but the sentiment is well received.
