It's that time of year for the Mets again!

With both the Phillies losing to the Pirates, and the Mets completing a three-game sweep with a 8-2 victory over the Nationals on Sunday, the Mets not only increased their NL East lead to a season-high 5 games, but also their magic number to clinch the division went down from 37 to 35 games. Yes, its once again time to think playoff baseball for the Amazins, who are now a season-high 17 games (70-53) over .500.

If the Mets pennant pack doesn't get you going, how about this stat: any combination of 35 Mets wins or Phillies/Braves loses (Braves trail Phillies by 1/2 game), the Mets will be NL Eastern Division champs for the second straight year. The Mets have 37 games to go, which makes this even look more promising, with still plenty of games remaining against their important division rivals in Atlanta and Philadelphia, as well as those left against the Florida Marlins, and the Washington Nationals.

Thanks to 7 innings of 2-run, 3-hit ball from Orlando Hernandez and a 2-hr, 4-rbi afternoon from Carlos Beltran (who's been torrid since coming off the DL), the Mets now have the biggest division lead out all 6 of the divisions. They can thank the Yankees winning ways and the Red Sox recent loses for that feat as well. Now, the Mets can build off it, with a 3 game series coming up versus the wild-card leading San Diego Padres tomorrow night.

Who is going to take out a (healthy) Mets team in the NL?

Dbacks?? I like their heart, but they are very young. Cubs? I hear a goat in the background, and it isn't Steve Bartman. Brewers? See "Dbacks." Cardinals? No pitching. Braves? They worry me, but they may not even get in the playoffs if they keep sliding.

Endy will be back to provide speed and hustle off the bench. Gotay can provide some pop off the bench. Castillo just keeps hitting singles.

Mets are getting hot at the right time.

You probably shouldn't talk about this time of the year like the Mets are perennial playoff participants. They're not the Braves. Both the Phils and Braves have been begging the Mets to run away with the division all year, but they haven't been able to. I don't know how much of an achievement it will be to squeak by in this division.
