Is it a Sport: X Games?

by Allonthefield

I've gotten a couple of comments lately on my debate about the merits of cheerleading as a sport, so I thought now might be a good time to pull out another Is it a Sport post.

And since the X Games 13 (wouldn't that be confusing if they used Roman numerals) is just starting, I figured that would be a good place to start.

I don't know many people who participate in extreme sports -- which to my knowledge include skateboarding, BMX biking, motocross, and a few other events -- but it seems like everyone who does has broken one bone at least once, if not multiple bones multiple times. Would the millions of weekend warriors lay it all on the line for an activity that isn't a sport?

Why the X Games might be considered a sport I thought I'd stumbled upon something when I couldn't find anything about the X Games on ESPN; then I realized ESPN had created an entirely separate EXPN site. They must take it pretty seriously, or at least believe they can make a lot of money in the deal.

And then there is the risk factor mentioned above. In this morning's highlights of yesterday's action, I saw a skateboarder attempt a huge jump, only to lose his board and freefall 40 feet to the ramp. Ouch!

From what I can tell, the risk is a big part of what makes these activities so appealing. And take a look around: millions of kids around the country are getting into the so-called extreme sports, so much so that building skate parks has become a fad in many US cities.

Why the X Games might not be considered a sport X Games activities are all about big speed, big jumps, big risk. But only since 1995 have these activities had a major forum for competition. And as we've discussed before, competition is a critical component for qualification as a sport.

Here's what I mean: if you take an activity that has historically been considered purely recreational, create a venue and throw some money at it, does that qualify it as a sport?

The other thing is physical fitness. If you're thinking right now that I couldn't do that stuff, save your breath. I can't. But I also can't do accounting, engineering, or architecture. While many of the X Games participants are extremely athletic, I'm not sure how much of an edge physical fitness gives them.

No one out there is fat, of course, but are these guys lifting weights, sprinting, or even jogging to better their chances at gold?

Final Ruling: X Games activities are not sports Certainty: Varying degrees. Skateboarding is a lot closer to being a sport than motocross. Perhaps I shouldn't have lumped them all together.

I don't considered anything that has to be "judged" a sport... except boxing. X games is more of a competition.

Insan, let me ask you...have you ever done "a sport" that has to be judged?

Is gymnastics a sport? Diving? Figure skating? Snowboarding? All of those are judged.

No, like I said, anything that is judged isn't a sport to me, except boxing.

Not a sport? Then why are they a major part of the Olympics every 2-4 years?

Because they are intriguing physical competitions.

So besides judging, what's the difference between a sport and a competition?

That's it. In competitions, athletes are awarded points based on the current judges, in sports, athletes are awarded points based on a league rules.

It's definitely fun to watch, and it takes a tremendous amount of skill and guts to do what these guys do. If you NASCAR is a sport, where guys have to be physically fit enough to drive in a hot car for a few hours, then the X Games has to be a sport.

The X games are impressive and even fun to watch from time to time. They are not a sport though. At least not the motorized parts of the game.

Definitely sports. It's physical, it involves competition against one another... This is easily a sport.

I reckon Speedway should be in it... But it sounds like an American creation, so I doubt it.

To be fair, most sports are recreational. That's how most people get into them. So I don't buy the recreational argument.

Physical fitness is hugely important in skateboarding. You need to generate energy and speed in the board to get the air to get the tricks in. I can't imagine a 300lb ex-NFL lineman doing it certainly... So I think that it is a major factor.

Most of them are considered sports in my option.

The Moto X, I have a bit of an issue with, since I liked the X-Games initally being just human powered, momentum based things.

The problem with it, overall, is we're still "judging" it ... but by that case, you'd have to make the case the X-Games are comparable to the Olympics, because many of the Olympic sports require judges and they're classified as such sport.

Several "Winter X Games" events weren't Olympic Events before the X-Games were conjured up ... now some are. Would we even know who Shaun White is?

But if you're talking about motorsports and you're de-classifying thing due to the motorized ... you'd have to eliminate any auto racing based on that inference alone.

X-Games ... for the most part ... are sports. And definitely should be shown over non-sports like poker, spelling bees, cup stacking, and hot-dog eating contests.

If you can bet on it, it's a sport.
