Is Scott Kazmir a dominant pitcher already?

As a bitter New York Mets fan, I need to bring this up. Scott Kazmir is currently 6-2 for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays with a 2.73 ERA. He's on pace right now for 226 innings, a 24-8 record, 226 strikeouts, 2.73 ERA and 1.37 Whip.

My thinking is that once he gets his control (which he will, more K's less BBs each year with his k/bb ratio in the minors being exceptional) he will be right up there with the best of them.

Is he for real or is this just a nice start? Will he ever be a Johan Santana-esqe pitcher? Did the Mets give up on the next pitching superstar?

Santana struggled with his control in the minors and when he first came up...once he gets it, watch out

I think Kazmir is for real, but he walks too many guys. If you put him on a better team I think he'll be more comfortable with his role. Right now, if he's pitching, he's having to win the game all by himself. No one on the field, except for Johnny Gomes I guess, it helping him.

He's going to be a really good pitcher, but I don't know if he's going to be a great pitcher. Johan Santana level might be a bit out of his reach. And like Pean said, this year all those baserunners are going to bite him in the ass eventually.

Kazmir is only 23 years old and seems to have conquered his demon: walks. The last two years, his BB/9 has been around 5. This year, however, it has dropped to 3.2, while he has maintained his dominance with a tremendous 9.0 K/9. HRs have never and still are not a problem for Kazmir. In fact, he has been a bit unlucky this year. Balls put in play against Kazmir have a batting average of .331, which is very high. Typically, BA on balls in play is around .290-.300 and Kazmir's was .316 last year. So, if Kazmir can maintain his high K's and low BB's, the hits will slow down some. Kazmir has been a top 10 pitcher this year and could stay there for the next few years.

If you put him back on the mets he would be great. Facing a lousy bottom third every way through the lineup he would get away with the high k rate. The D-Rays aren't exactly world beaters but he's putting up the #'s regardless. Include his stats post-all star break '05 (7-2, 2.79 era, 9.86 K/9) til now and it's obvious he's been dominant.

Actually, due to his small size (6'0", 170 lbs.), Kazmir has always had questions as to if he can endure 200 innings. I still think he will be a great starter for years to come but there have always been whispers that he will end up as a dominant closer similar to 5'11" Billy Wagner.

Scott Kazmir is indubitably having a very good year, but expect him to be one of thos guys who has 3 great years, and just when he is on the cusp of superstardom, he will suffer a terrible elbow/shoulder injury, and his career will be over.
