Is Romo the New Brady?

by Trizz

Maybe I'm getting caught in the hype of the most anticipated regular season football game since Ohio State-Michigan. After Tony Romo's terrible yet clutch performance I couldn't help but to compare to the greatest clutch QB in recent history, Tom Brady.

What makes QBs like Brady so clutch is that the game isnt over until the final seconds. As a team, the Patriots do not stop until the game is over, and I think they are the one team that can successfully recover a fumble when the other team is taking a knee.

Romo's final drive Monday night was very Brady-esque, and despite the mediocre -- well, horrible play of Romo, he got the win and that's all that matters. Brady won Super Bowl MVP of Super Bowl XXVI even though he only threw one touchdown and 145 yards -- a very mediocre game when you think about it in those terms. But in the end, all that mattered was that last drive and getting the W.

Considering that both QBs came from nowhere (and put Drew Bledsoe out of a job!), and are the quarterback of a storied franchise, the similarities are obvious. However, Romo will never become a Brady. Why? One, I don't see them winning a Super Bowl without a major defensive upgrade, and second Wade Phillips is NO Bill Belichick. Say what you want about Cameragate, Belichick is the best coach in the NFL, he's tough and he brings the best out of players. Wade Phillips celebrates a close win while Belichick would have been down Romo's throat to make sure that does not happen again. Young QBs need discipline, Romo got to at least his level because of Bill Parcells, and he'll plateau because of Phillips. Belichick is ripping Tom for 2 trips to the Red Zone that should have been touchdowns -- and they won by 17! To be a great QB you need skills, receivers and great coaching, and after Sunday you'll see why Romo will never be a Tom Brady.

Romo and Brady have very little in common. This is not a knock on either of them. Romo is a gunslinger style Quarterback. Where Brady is a ceribal QB. Romo is more of a Brett Favre style QB.

Romo's final drive was very nearly ended when he hit a Buffalo DB right in the numbers. That was not Bradyesque.

Romo had one bad game. Let's let the rest of the season play out.

He is over-rated. Until he can win a playoff game with WRs that suck (See: McNabb) I will not see him as an elite QB. He holds up under pressure, that's great, but I have yet to see him play great. If you watch this season, he throws A LOT of bad passes but is bailed out by the hands of his WR (When TO wants to)

If that is your criteria for a good QB then half of the QB's in the HOF are bad. What McNabb and even Brady did in their runs in recent years, is the exception and not the rule.

Okay, I will agree, but it is WAY too early to crown Romo. See: Rick Mirer, Damon Huard, Charlie Frye

Let's be honest, its not like Brady is Mr. missunderstoon child of the NFL. He's gotten more than his fair share of love from the media.

Please define "clutch". Is it similar to "grit"? When does it lead to "swagger"?

Clutch is excelling when it matters most

Grit is being able to perservere and maintain composure in tough situations

Swagger is being confident in one's ability to perform

Romo is not a "clutch player" yet. He did well to bring the Cowboys back on Monday, but he still has a lot of demons to get rid of first.

You mean you're comparing a guy who plays so poorly he needs the rest of the team to bail him out against a team one foot out of the basement in the AFC to Tom Brady? No thanks, I'm not gonna bite.

Besides, I think NE dismantles Dallas, and then the ACTUAL game of the year will be week 7 at the RCA Dome.

Eh... I guess my problem with it is Big 10 football is good to watch its tough and all that, but NO Big 10 team will make a realiztic push against the SEC and PAC 10 powerhouses for a title.

Uh, the football world is kind of looking forward to this game, you know -- at least until the much anticipated Steelers-Ravens game that will set offensive football back several decades.

Well thankyou very much for speaking for the entire football world. I forgot how important those regular season NFC-AFC matchups are. Forget about the Colts-Pats game later this year, I just wanna see Dallas face off against New England in week 6. I looked at my previous post and I don't see anything about the Steelers or Ravens but I guess since you, El Presidente, can speak for the football world you must also have been able to read between the lines. BTW Parker leads the league in rushing and the Steelers are the 7th overall offense, but who wants to watch that when we could see Gus Ferotte drive the greatest show on turf, huh?

This is adsurd. How clutch was Romo last year in the playoffs when he cost his team the game by muffing the field goal snap? He looked awful Monday night and was not clutch at all. His defense and special teams were clutch, not to mention the field gola kicker, but not him. His style is also nothing like Brady. He is more of a runner than a pocket QB and takes way more risky chances with the ball similar to Favre. He actually reminds me of Jim Everett. He can be so streaky in one game and so bad in another. The Pats win big this weekend. Don't see Dallas' D holding up.
