Is Manning Worth A First Round Selection

by FanProphet

There is without a question that Peyton Manning is the best quarterback in the league and the definitely a fantasy MVP at the position. However, does it make sense to draft him in the first or early second rounds? Even if you’re in a league where touchdown passes are worth six points you may want to reconsider.

Here’s a question and a thought to consider! Would you choose, Peyton Manning no later than 15 overall or Jon Kitna mid-late 5th round (54-60) as your starting quarterback? This scenario should be considered this season when thinking Manning is a clear-cut option as a first or early second round selection. Think about it, as it may become the difference between your win/loss column.

This scenario arose in both of my fantasy drafts this season. Manning was drafted 15th in one of my leagues, 8th in another, while Kitna slip to 52nd and 54th respectively.

In one of my drafts owners passed on players such as Rudi Johnson, Marvin Harrison, Willie Parker, and many other recognizable productive players by snagging Manning in the first round of our draft. How smart of a choice was this?

Think about it, if you wait to draft a player such as Kitna (or a same caliber quarterback)in the 5th round and pair him with either your first or second round selection, it’s almost a lock that they will out produce Manning and any other 5th rounder (Reggie Brown, Hines Ward, Plaxico Burress) who remain on the board.

Let’s suppose that Manning and Kitna have the exact same fantasy points as they did last season. Manning outscored Kitna 364 to 248, but of the three players owners have passed on to grab Manning early in most drafts, outscored the fifth rounder by a total of 642 to 404 points. As soon as you combine the totals (890-768) you will see that drafting a quarterback such as Kitna in the 5th round is the better choice. Now add in the fact that the Detroit Lions will be a better team with the addition of Calvin Johnson and all makes sense.

No matter how you look at it Manning is not worth a first round selection, what do you think?

Manning is definitely a top 10 pick in any fantasy football draft. Hence, if the league has 10 or more teams, he then becomes a first round pick.

Depends on your scoring system. In many leagues, consistent quarterback scoring is significantly more valuable than a second-tier running back. Once you get past LT, LJ, Alexander, Stephen Jackson, and, arguably, Gore, there is no better value pick on the board. If you have pick 5 or later and Manning is on the board, get him and get a running back on the way back.

Manning is like LT, wayyyyyyyyyyy better than any other QB, therefore he goes earlier than the QB parade round. (kinda like Gates goes extra early b/c there isn't a TE close to him)

You can expect a consistant scoring threat in manning...he'll put up something like 2-3 TDs 200 yards a game...no other QB can do that consistantly...sorta like LT and 100 yards and a TD or more...

And I find it better to have a consistant player versus one who has big point potential but you never know when to put him in to cash in on that. Peyton wnt #7 in my draft this year. Plus, who knows what sleeper you might pick up in round 5.

I hope Manning is a first or early second rounder in my draft tonight--that means a better 2nd RB for me.

What kind of question is that? Of course he is worth it.

Another often overlooked fact about Manning. You don't need a back-up which allows more roster space for other positions. At his bye-week, pick up some scrub (ditching a kicker, inj RB, etc.)
