Is Joe Mauer a legitimate MVP candidate?

15
Vote

by user twins15

We all know the story. He's been hyped up in magazines and websites like this all across the sports world. Mostly because he's a 23 year-old catcher leading the world in batting average.

But is he a legitimate MVP candidate?

Or rather, since David Ortiz probably has the award all but locked up at this point, should he be? Fortunately for me, as I only discovered after I started writing this, Joe Sheehan wrote about the AL MVP race as a whole, which was nice because that cuts down some of my research.

Anyway, when I say David Ortiz has this race all but locked up, IMO, isn't because I think he's the best player in the AL. I wrote once upon a time that Travis Hafner is the best hitter in the American League, and I still hold true to that belief. But I think Ortiz is percieved as being such a clutch god that he'll be voted the MVP. Which I wouldn't necessarily say is a bad thing, but not something I agree with.

So anyway, as I see it, the MVP candidates: Travis Hafner, David Ortiz, Manny Ramirez, Derek Jeter, Joe Mauer, Grady Sizemore, and Vernon Wells. Guys like Jim Thome, Justin Morneau, Johan Santana, and even Roy Halladay are tough omissions, but I think those guys mentioned are the top 7. Here's the more "traditional" stats for the 7 (AVG/OBP/SLG):

Travis Hafner: 303/428/640
David Ortiz: 287/399/624
Manny Ramirez: 323/432/625
Derek Jeter: 341/419/476
Joe Mauer: 361/441/522
Grady Sizemore: 304/384/537
Vernon Wells: 320/378/585

It's safe to say that things are pretty even all-around, especially when you consider that the guys at the top in hitting contribute little to nothing defensively. Ortiz and Hafner are full-time DHs, and Ramirez is average at best in LF. Meanwhile, Joe Mauer is a very good defensive catcher, Grady Sizemore and Vernon Wells are both very solid defensive CFs, and even Derek Jeter has improved his range enough to be pretty decent defensively at SS.

Looking specifically at Mauer, one of the only negatives about his game right now is that he doesn't hit many HRs. Which is true. However, he makes up for that, at least IMO, with his great batting average, good number of walks (which contribute for his league-leading OBP), and a good amount of doubles. For all of the talk about the lack of power, Mauer's still in the top 15 in SLG in the AL, which is pretty darn good.

As far as VORP goes, Travis Hafner leads the MLB in it even without playing defense. He actually has a pretty substantial lead, with teammate Grady Sizemore second, followed by Manny Ramirez, Derek Jeter, Joe Mauer, and then David Ortiz.

Looking at EQA, Manny Ramirez has the slight lead. When we look at WARP1, Joe Mauer has a slight lead over Grady Sizemore.

So what does all that mean? Probably nothing. Or just that this year more than ever there are a lot of qualified candidates in the American League for the MVP award. For what it's worth, here's what my list would look like at this point:

1) Travis Hafner
2) Manny Ramirez
3) Joe Mauer
4) David Ortiz
5) Derek Jeter

What about Morneau, he's on pace for over 40 HRs and 140 Rbis. Not too shabby.

He has been tremendous, but does not stack up with Hafner, Manny, Ortiz as pure offensive players.

Even as a Tribe fan, I have to say that Hafner and Sizemore shouldn't be on their list. The Indians are in 4th place. In the same regard, Thome should be on it.

One thing's for sure: Grady and Pronk are studs.

Absolutely no way that Thome isn't top-4 this year. Sizemore is a great player, but his team stinks this year.

Why should he be penalized for a bad team, or more accurately, a bad bullpen? That doesn't make him any less valuable.

So to win the MVP your team has to be good? I didn't know this was voting criteria.

I think that there is a split in authority with regard to whether the player's team has to be competitive. History shows that voters take into account the teams history. Can anyone remember an MVP that won on a team that was below .500?

A-Rod in 2003 on a 71-91 team and Ripken in 1991 for a 67-95 team.

Not my rules Tartan -- Andre Dawson is the only player in MLB history to win MVP from a last place team. If the MVP almost automatically comes from a winner, then there should be a Most Outstanding Player award. Mauer wins that this season.

Wrong, ARod won on a last place team, in addition to Andre Dawson in 1987. Most valuable player is one of the most misconstrued terms in sports. Does your team have to have a lot of wins for your value to be counted? Where would the tribe be without Hafner's 6 grand slams, or all those RBIs? Isn't there value in not being the Royals. As it appears now, Boston will not make the playoffs, so what real value 9in your definition, not mine) does David Ortiz have. Does the award have to go to a playoff team? It doesn't have to go to a winning team, it just so happens that over the years teams with great players win more, so the two things (MVPs and winning %) get linked when they were just the results of an outlying factor, the quality play of individuals. I agree with the top rankings, for they represent the quality of play from each individual.

There is a Sporting News Player of the Year award, which goes to best stats guy each year... MVP doesn't always = best stats

You're right Tartan -- Rangers were last place that season. Good catch.

The best players should come through in the clutch situations. That's why I think that Ortiz should get it. Perhaps Ortiz should always have the mindset that it's bottom of the nineth, two-outs, runner at second, and a tie game.

I would give it to Jeter slightly over Mauer. This is a great race for MVP.

There is no way that Mauer is in the running for the MVP award. No way! He's had a good year and has a nice-looking batting average, but the MVP often considers how you rank among your peers in key stats.
Mauer's ranks: Average-.361 (1st), Runs-62 (42nd), HR-10 (68th), RBI-64 (30th), OPS-.963 (8th).

If anyone from Minnesota is deserving, look at Justin Morneau:
Average-.318 (10th), Runs-67 (30th), HR-30 (8th), RBI-103 (4th), OPS-.977 (7th).

I don't think either will win, but if anyone from Minnesota deserves it, it's Morneau, not Mauer.

You have to consider Mauer is a great defensive catcher, while Morneau does not contribute on defense.

Also, Morneau is not the best 1B/DH in the league, while Mauer is far-and-away the best catcher.

All things considered, I think I would still vote for Morneau over Mauer. He's had a breakout offensive season and carried this team with his bat for more than a couple of stretches this year. But as I stated earlier, neither of them would get my vote for league MVP.

A few things - 1) Morneau has contributed defensively, as he is an above average defensive 1B, but he hasn' contributed nearly as much there as Mauer has at catcher. 2) Morneau wouldn't have nearly the amount of RBI he has without Mauer getting on base at a league-leading rate ahead of him... Morneau has been an excellent hitter, but as others have said, I don't think he's been as good as other DH/1B, while Mauer has clearly been the top C. 3) The OPS stat impresses me, because it tells me Mauer's SLG is not that bad (no he, doesn't hit a lot of HR, but he hits doubles), and that his OBP is great. And generally speaking, a high OBP is more valuable than a high SLG. 4) I'm not sure I'd vote for either of them as MVP either (I put Mauer 3rd), but if I'd put Mauer higher than Morneau because he's been just as good hitting while contributing excellent defense behind the plate.
