Is Jimmy Clausen the Next Ron Powlus?

Hopefully for Notre Dame’s sake he isn’t, but the similarities are there. Not only are they there, but after every game…Every dismal performance by Clausen they only keep building a better case for it. Ironically enough Ron Powlus, (or should I say Coach Powlus as peeps know his ass now) is trying to coach up the young blue chipper into something that he wasn’t during his play days in South Bend, living up to all the hype when he first stepped on campus 14 years ago as Jimmy Clausen I…However, for the most part looks as if Jimmy Clausen II looks like nothing more than Ron Powlus did 14 years ago…A project gone bad!
We all know the stories of these two…The movies are part one and two. Mr. All Everything on a high school football field…Can do nothing wrong! Greatest thing since slice bread! Coming to South Bend with the expectations of Heismans and National Championships, (plural) to put in the trophy cases…Although funny thing happened! You know that chant everybody hates to hear, the "Overrated" one, yeah that one! Well, it certainly applied to Powlus as he definitely was as Beno Cook woke up from his nap saying the kid was going to win two Heismans and two National Championships. So when all this "Powlus Hype" came back and surrounded Clausen, I wasn’t drinking that Kool-Aid…No sir, "You fool me once, shame on you…You fool me twice, shame on me!" Not only was Clausen the greatest thing since sliced bread, but he had a cherry on top as well!
Well here we are eight games into the season and Jimmy Clausen has one, count’em one touchdown pass! One would think for being not only the top high school quarterback coming out, but the top player overall coming out, you get a little more production! Okay, I’ll discount his first two starts since the offense was no better than a powderpuff team, but you don’t do shit with a plus seven turnover margin against UCLA and follow that up by getting yanked after the first series in the second half against Boston College…A game in which surprisingly enough Notre Dame had somewhat of a chance to win. If Clausen’s is in fact so "good", well I’m still waiting and wanting to see it! It’s been said he can make all the throws…I’m assuming they’re referring to the different variations of the screen pass because that’s all he has shown he can do!
See I think the problem stems from ever since signing his letter of intent everything has been given to him on a silver platter…Hasn’t really had faced any competition for the starting gig! Well, it’s about damn time Charlie Weis realizes that quarterback competition breeds the best out of players! For he needs to do whatever he does and figure out that Evan Sharpley just in fact may be the better of the two quarterbacks…For Sharpley has shown that he can at least handle a junior varsity playbook rather than the Pop Warner one Clausen has been running all year! Weis vowed against Boston College to take the handcuffs off Clausen…Haven’t we heard this time and time again this year? Yeah, he took the handcuffs off so much that he had to sit him down because he sucked so bad!
Still, it boggles my mind to think that this in fact was the top quarterback on the recruiting board a year ago! Pete Carroll must be so thankful that Clausen’s Weis’s problem instead of his! While the Irish offensive woes run deeper than Jimmy…Clearly he’s not the answer to this problem, at least for this year anyway! I say let Sharpley start the remaining part of the schedule…It can’t hurt! Besides Weis’s playing for next year anyway…With a possible stint on the Budweiser Hot Seat if things continue the way they are!
