Is Jerry West on his way to LA?

Could West turn the Lakers into a title contender? Not overnight.
Could West turn the Lakers into a title contender? Not overnight.

Ever since the Lakers lost to the Phoenix Suns in the first round of the playoffs, there has been much speculation throughout the Los Angeles area and nationwide that former team president Jerry West could be returning to the Lakers. West is well known to Laker fans as the man who constructed the trade for Kobe Bryant and the signing of Shaquille O'Neal. These moves made in the summer of 1996 offseason layed the foundation for a dynasty and one of the greatest one-two punches in NBA history.

Now resides the possibility that West could save the Lakers and make them an NBA championship team once again. While, no real annoucement has been made regarding West’s possible return to the Lakers, the chance that he joins the front office is still fairly likely. If he were to join, than West would be an advisor or consultant to General Manager Mitch Kupchak. Believe, that man needs all of the advising necessary.

As we speek, the majority of Laker fans are drooling over the prospects of West’s return. Instead of being a simple advisor, most fans envision West as a "savior."

So the real question is: If West does indeedreturn how much of an impact will he make? To answer the question, not much. While West will certainly help, annointing him as the savior is going way too far. He can certainly help the team improve through free agency and the draft. Most people expect West to make some sort of blockbuster deal and with his magical wand land Kevin Garnett, Jermaine O'Neal, or Jason Kidd with scraps. That ain’t going to happen Laker fans. The idea that he will turn the Lakers into a championship team overnight is completely inaccurate. He can make this team a five or four seed in the Western Conference by adding a few pieces through the draft and with the team’s mid-level exception. This is an average Laker team right now. A team that is also incapable of signing a big free agent due to being over the cap. You can talk all you want Laker fans about getting Garnett or Kidd, but you actually need to trade pretty good players for All-Stars. Relax people, it’s Jerry West, not Jesus Christ.

I like the phrase but age won't impact a GM/President too much.

I think once Jerry comes back, he in the very least restores an air of legitimacy to the Lakers...I agree it's not a cure-all, but it's a damn good start.

Jerry on his way in means Kobe's on his way out, and he can take his personal assistant Phil with him.

Kobe Bryant is the "A-Rod" of the NBA, not LeBron James. And the Lakers would not have won those NBA titles without the big guy. This team never recovered after its messy divorce from Shaq.

no, Kobe isn't expected to save the Lakers. He's supposed to be the go to guy, not the Franchise all by himself

But Kobe plays and acts like he is the franchise, and the Lakers have acted accordingly--they chose Kobe over Shaq. Since then, Shaq has another ring and the Lakers have either missed the playoffs or not made it out of the second round. FP, you and I know Kobe isn't the franchise, but he doesn't, and neither do the Lakers.

A Complete and idiotic statement Briggs. Kobe hit clutch shot after another when the Lakers won their titles. He won Game 4 against the Pacers in the 2000 Finals. Shaq fouled out and Kobe saved the day in OT. He hit the Gamewinner in Game 2 against the Suns in the 2000 semis. Ask the Spurs if he was clutch. In the 2000 West Finals, he through the great pass to Shaq for a dunk. He saved the day with a clutch shot countless times for the Lakers. That definately deserves a minus. I should even create another account to give you two minuses. My statement is backed up with evidence and yours is backed with a lack of knowledge.

And what have the Lakers won after Big Diesel was ousted out of town? Bryant was a BIG reason to why a championship team in its prime was dismantled. And he got his wish "to be the man" as Jackson left (only to return) and O'Neil sent off to Miama (to win last year's championship).

O'Neil was part of a championship team last year (I think Pat Riley would agree that Shaq was integral to that team) and Beast references games played 7 years ago? The bottomline is that Shaq was kicked out of LA only to win another championship with Miami. Kobe as "The Man" has yielded absolutely nothing in terms of further championship banners for the Lakers without the big guy. Bryant put his own needs ahead of the team which resulted in Jackson and O'Neil's departure. Buss chose the wrong man and continues to pay now.

I don't think either Shaq or Kobe would have won titles without playing alongside the other (or at least without a reasonable facsimile of the other). People seem to forget that it was a perfect storm of Shaq + Kobe + a very good collection of role players that gave L.A. their three championships. Shaq subsequently won another ring because he went from L.A. to a situation where he was immediately surrounded by a facsimile of Kobe as a sidekick (D-Wade, who is probably even better than Bryant) and similarly strong role players. In contrast, Kobe has been surrounded by a collection nobodies ever since Shaq left, so it's really no wonder that the team hasn't achieved the same level of success without O'Neal -- as good as Kobe is (and, believe me, he's damn good), he can't make up for the shortcomings of his teammates. I will say that Shaq was more important to those championship Laker teams than Kobe, but to point to Shaq's fourth championship as somehow being evidence that Bryant is a "loser" is a specious argument at best, given the different talent levels of their respective supporting casts.

Title runs need a lot of chips to fall into place (how about a weak Eastern Conference? A chief foe in the Sactown Kings - who were never going to win a title with Webber and we all knew it)

The Lakers will probably never win another championship, thanks to Kobe.

And another reason Kobe ain't Mike. Kobe can't back people down on mismatches and in the post like MJ did. MJ was 6-6 when 2 guards weren't. He didn't need a dominant center. He created mismatches and double teams from smaller players and blew by bigger players. Kobe can only face people up and shoot. He's not going to back guys down and get layups and easy turnarounds. People forget that MJ scored a lot of easy layups and point blank shots from the post. MJ wasn't a jump shooter like Kobe. Kobe just works through sheer volume (Kobe is a more accurate long range shooter even).

Kobe will NEVER win a ring without a top-5 center, I'll tell you that much...

Mr. Briggs, you're last statement was dead on correct. Shaq was undoubedly the key to the Lakers titles and was their best player, proven by the fact he won a title with another team, in a different conference, with a totally different style of play. Kobe is a wannabe Michael, and is clear over the past three seasons he lacks both the playing skills and leadership skills to a) win another title, and b) ever be mentioned in the same breath with either Shaq or MJ.

Michael wanted to win at all costs.

Kobe wants to be Michael at all costs.

That's the difference between the two.

Tyrone you're correct in saying that Kobe would've won without the big guy. That is true, but Shaq would not have won without Kobe either. They both needed each other and a reliable supporting cast to win. Shaq got that in Miami with D-Wade and some other vets while Kobe lacks that in LA. However, saying he is the A-Rod of the NBA is too far because Kobe played a major role in those titles and remains the best clutch shooter in the game today. Maybe not the best player, but the best clutch shooter. Not LeBron and not A-Rod.

It was far more important for Kobe Bryant to be "the man" for the LA Lakers than to swallow his pride and get along with his teammates and agree to play in his coach's system that had produced so many championships. Jerry Buss made a stupid decision to go along with Kobe's request and the Lakers have been next to no threat for a championship ever since. Bryant has the talent but has never chosen the needs of his team over his ego. And for that reason alone, he will never be "the next anything" in terms of legitimate greatness. Bryant may score a future 100 point game or two sometime before his career checks out and even sit near or at the top of the career scoring records but he is not on pace to be remembered anywhere near the caliber of Jordan because of that immense intangible drive to do whatever it takes win championships.

Uh, Shaq demanded the trade. Kobe never said a peep. He may have not wanted to play with Shaq because of the Diesal's lazy habbits. He didn't want scraps he wan't Shaq to leave. I think that Shaq and Kobe both deserve a lot of blame. Shaq as much as Kobe. They both acted like little girls.

Agreed. Neither player liked each other. GM Mitch Kupchak was instrumental in Shaq's leaving LA and restructuring the Kobe Bryant contract. It is notable that O'Neal was primarily responsible for recruiting others such as Payton and Malone to play for the Lakers in order to win a championship. Kupchak prioritizing Kobe Bryant's happiness over retooling a potential championship team killed the Lakers and they continue to pay to this day. And for a supposed zen master pacifist such as Phil Jackson, it says a lot that the guy would rather quit at that time than stay with the team and its "uncoachable" superstar. Why Jerry West would even consider rejoining this organization at this juncture is beyond me unless Bryant is on his way out of LA? More here:http://sport...y?id=1824691 (old 2004 link)
