Is Clemens Telling the Truth?

Baseball Notebook: Is Clemens Telling the Truth?

With his latest denials of never using steroids Roger Clemens will lose any credibility he may have had if it turns out later he did use steroids. One thing for sure is that either Brian McNamee or Clemens is lying. Clemens fired McNamee as his trainer last May so McNamee could be getting back at Clemens but I have a feeling that what McNamee told to Mitchell investigators is true and that Clemens is grasping at straws to protect his image.

If Clemens is lying to protect himself then baseball fans will be wondering if anyone is telling the truth except those like Andy Pettitte and Brian Roberts who have admitted using steroids in some form.

One thing is almost positive and that is that Clemens will probably never step on a major league field to pitch again. But with Roger you never say never as he likes to make a lot of money pitching a half a season or less. I think after the 6-6 record of last season Clemens will hang up for good. He will never get a contract like the one last year for pitching a little more than half a season. I can't see the Yankees bringing him back again since they appear to have a solid starting pitching rotation for next season if they don't trade too many young starters to acquire Johan Santana. The Yankees hope they don't have to call up pitcher after pitcher from minors like they did last season till Phillip Hughes and Ian Kennedy pitched well for them.

For the sake of Clemens I hope he is telling the truth. If he is lying he is doomed to being remembered as the pitcher who used steroids and lied to the fans about it. Curt Schilling has called for Clemens to be stripped of any Cy Young awards won after 1997 if it is proved beyond a doubt that he did use steroids. I am not saying McNamee could be the one lying but can't see any reason he would implicate Clemens unless he is seeking retribution for Clemens firing him last May. The truth will come out sooner or later and we will know for sure who is lying and who isn't.

Carlos Silva Agrees With Mariners On Four Year Contract for $44 Million

Who is going to stop the insanity? Carlos Silva will receive $44 million over the next four years from the Mariners despite having a 24-29 record over the last two seasons. In those two seasons he has given up 93 more hits than innings pitched. However, in his defense he only gave up 68 walks total in 382 innings pitched over the last two seasons.

It looks like it no longer matters if a pitcher has a losing record. If a pitcher like Silva can demand this kind of money and get it then we will continue to see losing pitchers making the big bucks.

It used to be that even the best pitchers in baseball were paid paltry sums for spectacular seasons. It reminds me of the spring training holdout in 1966 of Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale who were asking for a million dollar contract for three years with each of them getting $167,000 during the three years. They finally agreed to sign with Koufax receiving $125,000 and Drysdale receiving $110,000 so they made $235,000 combined in 1966 which was not close to the $1 million they requested for three years. Koufax had won 26 games and struck out 382 batters in the 1965 season.

In today's market Koufax would be in the $18-20 million a year range. It may not be fair to compare two different eras but it still is a shame that two Hall of Fame pitchers made $235,000 combined in 1966 while a pitcher with only 55 career wins will be making $11 million by himself in 2008.

O.J. has lied his way to over ten years of freedom....heard he is looking for the real killer on golf courses now. He has spent over $5 looking for the real killer.

Clemens has a lot more reasons to lie than McNamee. Clemens is not going to be charged with perjury for lying unless he is called into court...so he must be thinking he can lie and fans are too dumb to know he is lying.

So if he spent $5 on a beer for Jamel it means he has not spent a penny on finding the real killer. He shold look in the mirror and make a citizen's arrest and he would have the real killer and might even get a reward.

So far Pettite, Vina, and Brian Roberts have all come forward and confirmed what was written in the Mitchell report. That pretty good accuracy so far. I am not inclined to think that Mitchell would get it SO wrong with one of the biggest names in the sport. He is not including a legend like Clemens in the report unless he is confident that his information is correct.

I think Clemens is making a huge mistake denying all involvement with steroids. Like MJD wrote it is not likely Mitchell report would mention Clemens in such detail unless it is true.

It would make the whole report questionable if the Clemens charges were not true.

Is Clemens telling the truth? NO

And Koufax would be worth 30 million plus today.

And Drysdale is likely the worst player in Cooperstown. But even he is worth more than 11 million

Clemens is the best pitcher of this generation... Bonds is the best hitter... neither deserve this fact, but thats what the roids did for them, and neither of them deserve to be in the hall Where are we on the lifetime ban for steroids? After the third offense, correct?

I believe Roger. He's been nothing but honest throughout his career. Like remember when he said he could never pitch against the Red Sox? Or how about when he retired? Clemens is a straight shooter.</sarcasm>

I have a hard time believing that he hasn't done anything. His stats indicate the same thing that Bond's do.Players just don't get better after the age of 35 unless they are bowlers or golfers.I will however wait until he answers the questions at the appropiate time. Our legal system still says innocent until Proven guilty.

It's such a shame that all of these people are trying so hard to back Clemens up too.

"Nolan Ryan still pitched fast when he was in his 40s."

Gimme a friggin break. Is that the best you got? First off, Nolan Ryan was actually in shape throughout his career. Secondly, Clemens wasn't, and you could tell as soon as his incredible stats changed back to Cy Young material again.

How can we make him 'fess up? How about a little duct tape, a tree, 2 pounds of honey, and about a million red ants? But I'm against cruelty to ants.

I think Meche is worse than Silva in that he had a 9-13 record in his first year with the Royals while being paid $7.4 million. He will make even more in the coming years since signed for $55 million over five years. In the defense of Meche he probably didn't get too much run support with the Royals and may have won a lot more games with a better team. He was 4th in the league among starters who started at least 34 games with only Dan Haren, C.C. Sabathia and Scott Kazmir having better ERA's than Meche.

I don't know, but if some guy had told lies about me of the magnitude Clemens alleges McNamee told about him, I'm not sure I would have been coherent enough to put a sentence together much less weigh the pros and cons of a lie detector test. But the steroid issue came to this only because baseball allowed it. Hell, when McGwire, Sosa and Bonds were jacking out balls at an unprecedented pace, MLB loved it. TV ratings shot up, live attendance shot up and the cash was rolling in. Who cared that Bonds head and feet were getting larger by the minute? It seems disingenuous for MLB to be coming down on these guys now. Baseball is guilty of aiding and abetting at the least.
