Is Boise State Number One?: BigPPup vs. The Beast

16
Vote

BigPPup is voting Boise State number one in the final ArmchairGM College Football poll. Is he crazy or not. There are definately some valid reasons for voting the Broncos number one, but are there enough reasons to vote them over Florida. In this debate BigPPup will take the side of Boise State being number one and I'll take the side of Florida. It's up to you Armchair users to decide the winner.

How good is Boise State? That is what I want to know. The Fiesta Bowl was great and they are a nice story, but is that how we determine number one teams. To figure out how good teams are we must see them play other top 25 opponants. Boise State hasn't played a top ten calibar team all year. They killed Oregon State early in the season, but the Beavers weren't as good back then. The Beavs used the upset over USC to propell them to a 10 win season. They won the majority of their games after the SC game. SO clearly they weren't a top 25 team when Boise played them at HOME! Look I loved the Fiesta Bowl. It was the most exciting game I have ever witnessed, but Boise almost lost three times. With 4 & 18 the game was almost done, but they converted. 4 & 2, they converted, and the 2 point conversion was good. What are the odds that all these do or die plays would work in order for the Broncos to win? Not very good the actual chances of a team converting all three of these plays are slim to none. If they falter in the least than Oklahoma wins. Besides Oklahoma wasn't even that to start out with. They won the Big XII in a down year for the conference and lacked a healthy Adrian Peterson for most of the year including the first three quarters of the bowl games.

Thats skewed! You get three votes for that! Common. Why would anybody give points to that. How does that contribute to the topic that Boise State is the number one team in the nation.

Good teams convert the clutch plays. Those are the plays that seperate an average team from a good team. Look at the Patriots in their championship runs and the special teams plays they made. Look at the FSU teams that lost national titles because of poor plays ,or ask the Cowboys and Tony Romo

Yes they made clutch plays, but the game didn't need to be that close. They began the game up 14-0, but let the Sooners comeback. In the 4th Quarter, Boise was up by 8 and then let Oklahoma score. The Sooners were then able to score on a 2 point conversion after two failed attempts. So with the game tied, Zabransky threw an interception that was returned for a touchdown. Now you know the rest. I understand that good teams make clutch plays, but they don't make mistakes (penalties during the 2 point conversion and an INT in the closing minutes) during the closing minutes that allow the opposition back into the games. They were able to make the famous "clutch" plays because they let Oklahoma back into the game. If they were playing a top 5 team than they could've gotten away with mistakes and still pull out a win.

So then by your same strand of logic, Oklahoma got lucky converting on clutch plays just to get into the game

Thats why Oklahoma isn't the number one team or even a top ten team.

Good teams convert the clutch plays. That is very true, but clutch plays happen in tight ballgames. Why does it take mirracle or clutch plays to beat an average Oklahoma team. Florida didn't need "clutch" plays to beat Ohio State. They simply dominated them.

I just asked Tony Romo. He said if he had scored 2 more TD's than they would've needed the clutch play. They would've blown them out like FLorida did against Ohio State.

Boise played the schedule they were given. They cannot go on the road and play every non conference game away from their stadium. Top 25 teams are scared to come and play on their Blue turf thats just the way it is. No good team wants a part o fthem there, and good teams always defend their home turf

Its not their fault they play a weak schedule, but it is a fact.

They play in the conference that they have to, they schedule whoever will play them, which is a shrinking list. Boise did everything the BCS asked of them, and they deserve to be rewarded for it

So you've mentioned that Boise deserves to be rewarded for their play. What about Florida. Would it be fair to the Gators to have Boise State ranked number one. Definately not. They played in the SEC and played very tough schedule, much tougher than the Broncos. Florida did about all they were asked to do, winning the SEC and beating Ohio State in the National Championship Game. Not voting them number one wouldn't be fair to the Gators for they justly won the title.

Yes, they are very deserving. They are deserving for an oppurtunity to play for a title not to be simply crowned champs without playing for the title in a championship.

Florida also lost games along the way during the season. Yes they do play in a good conference perhaps the best in the country, but they lost nonetheless. The Broncos are undefeated.

I think Florida would be undefeated if they had played Sacramento State, Wyoming, Hawaii, Utah, Louisiana tech, Idaho, Fresno State, San Jose State, Utah State, and Nevada as 11 of their 12 regular seaspn games with Oregon State at home.

Theres a good chance that Boise would lose a game on that schedule, however they didnt lose a game. They did everything the BCS asked of them and again the BCS is screwing a team. Remember Boise was the first mid major football team to open the door for the Utahs of the world.

I know they did everything the BCS asked them to do, but does that make them the number one team. Auburn did everything that was asked of them in '04, but USC was still number one. Sometimes you have to do more than what was asked. USC had to beat Oklahoma, but they did more, they dominated them. I didn't see Boise State dominate Oklahoma or anyother teams on their schedule.

So enough of this comparing schedules. To be the number one team, that team must be the best, most complete team. They way to determine a better team is to have them play a game. Since we don't have a playoff then let me do a forecast. On Monday we saw, a Florida defense that completely shut down Ohio State. Let me remind you that the Buckeyes had playmakers all across the field, a Heisman winner in Troy Smith, and an offense that scored 42 points against Michigan in the game of the century. What they did was amazing! Troy Smith was ineffective all night. This Troy Smith was the big game player, and according to Archie Griffin, "If Troy has that look like he had against Michigan than Florida doesn't stand a chance." If the Florida defense dominated him imagine what they'll do to Zabransky. Oh ya, they stopped the run to as Antonio Pittman was innefective too. I wouldn't say that Ian Johnson is a big step above him at all. Florida defense is clearly a powerhouse to go along with a well-oiled offensive attack that will score when neccessary. Was 41 points against number one Ohio State enough. Common many do you really think that Boise State is a better more complete team that could stand toe to toe and beat Florida on any given day.

So since you just threw out the entire debate we just had and sold out to the system. Just because Florida had the chance to play Ohio State and cowboyed up for that Monday night does not mean that they are the best team.(Despite what the BCS says)The Buckeyes were good but they had no speed, and thats where Florida beat them. Let me remind you that Boise State has athletes and great Coaching that can go a long way as they have proven. They deserve consideration for a national title.
