Is Biron the Answer?

From my blog, The Lazy Athlete

It’s late August, and that means two things: Baseball pennant races and the start of football is upon us. So the next logical step is to talk about hockey, right? No? Well, I’m going to do it anyway. With the Flyer’s off-season transformation complete, there is a lot of optimism coursing through the Philadelphia area. But considering the team is coming a franchise worst season where they finished last in the NHL, is there too much optimism? That remains to be seen, but there is one position in particular where that may be the case. Martin Biron came over in a trade from the Buffalo Sabres before the end of last season. He helped the team finish relatively strong, and was later signed to a contract extension. He is being penned by many as the clear cut starting goaltender that the Flyers have consistently lacked. But should he be?

Maybe Biron shouldn’t be built up to be a savior in goal. After all he did lose the starting job in Buffalo to Ryan Miller. Yes, Miller is a great young goaltender, but how smart is it to call a backup goalie the answer for your team. Now if the Flyers went out and got a backup, like Ilya Bryzgalov, who has proven his ability to lead a team in the playoffs, there would be more reason for the optimism.

Secondly, the idea that a team needs one clear cut star in goal to win is a little antiquated. Granted, a great goalie can make a team dramatically better, but it is not a necessity. In today’s game it is more important for a team to have two solid goalies, and for one of those goalies to get hot come playoff time. Last season, the Ottawa Senators made it to the Stanley Cup finals with an average goalie in Ray Emery. They won from balanced offense and solid defense.

Finally, and most significantly, goaltending has not been the Flyer’s problem over the past 5-10 years. No matter how much anyone tries to tell you this, don’t believe them. Last year the problem was simply everything. Take a look at all the quality chances opposing teams got game in and game out, and it’s hard to put the blame on Antero Nittymaki. The team started to win when Biron arrived largely due to the improved play of the defense. In previous years, they’ve continually had great goaltending performances. Brian Boucher, Roman Czekmanek, Robert Esche have all put on great playoff performances. If ‘Manek could have gotten any offensive support, the Flyers could’ve went deep into the playoffs. Both Boucher and Esche took the team within one win of the finals.

Is Biron an upgrade at goal? Probably. But at the very least, he gives the Flyers two very viable options in goal – a requirement in today’s NHL. It is a little inappropriate, however, to label Biron the “answer,” considering that the question came from everywhere on the ice except the goal.

Let's not forget that Biron spent his first three years learning and backing up All World goaltender Dominik Hasek before becoming the starter. His GAA since 2000-01 are as follows: 2.55, 2.22, 2.56, 2.52, 2.88 before last year's 3.02 performance. His save % has always been above .900 at the end of the year, and he can win games. After Esche played just 18 games last season, I don't consider him a viable option period.

Biron is the modern day version of Bob Frose.

For those who do not know. Frose was the back-up goalie on the great Flyer teams of the mid 1980's. He, however, always played second fiddle to first Pelle Lindberg, and then Ron Hextall. Frose, nonetheless, thought he was a starter. He was finally traded to the Rangers during the 86-87 season. The Rangers made the playoffs that season and Frose was the goalie, before being bounced from the playoffs by the Flyers and Hextall. After that season, Frose career quickly came to an end.

Biron is just the opposite. Instead of trading away a wannabe starter, the Flyers traded for him. It will end the same way as Frose did. Hopefully Nitty will be able to come back and be the goalie the Flyers desperately need.

Gotta think that the flyers goaltending problems aren't terrible...I don't think Antero Niittimaki, Robert Esche or Martin Biron is the "ace in the hole" goaltender the flyers really want but none of them is terrible either... The Atlantic will be a slugfest

The Atlantis is going to be owned by the Pens. The fight will be for second place - likely between the Rangers and the Flyers.

Everyone thinks the Penguins are going to win the division but I tell you after seeing the offseasons the Flyers and Rangers had it is going to be a three way fight. Now the Flyers are deff going to be the most improved hockey team in the entire league with the improvements they made. They sured themselves on defense grabbing two former captains to lead the defense. There offense has upgraded big time too with the addition of Briere and the two young forwards who have a lot of potential in the trades they made. Jeff Carter and Mike Richards are two players who had miserable years last year with a ton of upside and will learn alot at the center position from Briere. Now Biron will be good in goal and I beleive he will remain there the entire year. This team has the potential to win the division and even make a run at representing the Cup in Philadelphia.

I will attribute your thought process in the hopes that you are a deluded homer Flyer fan who overlooked all the things that were wrong with the Flyers in 2006-07. You cannot expect the Flyers to go from THE worst team in the league last year (56 points, 11 less than 29th place PHX, 14 less than WAS, who was second to last in the East, and 36 points out of the playoffs) to Cup contenders.

Daniel Briere is a sound acquisition, but he was stifled in the series with the Rangers because of the size factor. He will not be as productive, as there is no Drury, Vanek, Derek Roy, Afinogenov, Kotalik, etc skating with him. Carter and Richards COMBINED for 24 goals and 45 assists in 121 games between them and were a -29. Gagne is the big goal scoring threat (41 last year), then it went down to Knuble with 24, and Umberger was third with 16.

The team will improve, but you will not see them making a run at the Cup anytime soon...I don't think they will make the playoffs in 07 08. The Atlantic is too laced with talent, in New York, New Jersey, and Pittsburgh, Ottawa and Buffalo are tough, though the Sabres may regress this season, the Leafs are improved, Atlanta is solid, Tampa Bay, Carolina. Right there are ten teams that can easily make the postseason without even worrying about the Flyers.

Why can't you expect it? We saw the same exact thing happen last season with the Pittsburgh Penguins. They were starting play a lot better late last year even before they made all the improvements. No one is saying they are cup favorites or anything, but you can't deny that the turnaround time for them should be pretty short.

Before you even try to compare the Penguins to the Flyers, look at the talent Pittsburgh put on the ice. Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Jordan Staal, Mark Recchi, Gary Roberts, Ryan Malone, Michel Ouellet, Erik Christensen, Maxime Talbot and Colby Armstrong all potted at least a dozen goals from the forward position. Their defense is led by Sergei Gonchar and Ryan Whitney. Marc Andre Fleury won 40 games and had a 2.83 GAA. What do the Flyers have to match up with that talent that even allows you to consider comparing the two teams?

How did all that talent do the year before last when they were dead last? And don't tell me Staal and Malkin are what turned that team around. They didn't even make that many adjustments, like the Flyers have made. The Flyers have Briere, Gagne, Knuble, Carter, Richards, Lupol, Kapanen, Hartnell, Upshall, Timonen, Biron, Nittymaki, etc. The best and worst in the NHL are always in movement nowadays
