Iraq: The Incredible Story

It's amazing how Iraq is able to muster up a soccer team when you consider the fact that there is a war going on. But as they always do, they competed in the 2007 Asian Cup. This was a tournament in which Iraq was never considered to be a favorite, but Iran, Saudi Arabia, Japan, and South Korea were. The Iraqi's had never even made it to an Asian Cup final, so of course they were unlikely to win. Not only did they win in their group, they had dominated another Pre-Tournament favorite in Australia, winning 3-1.

They had won their games over Vietnam, and stunned South Korea on penalty kicks to advance to their first Asian Cup final ever. What made this bittersweet, were the suicide bombers blowing up sections of the country, and several soccer fans celebrating their team's improbable run.

So now their final opponent was the Asian soccer powerhouse in Saudi Arabia. Iraq were heavy underdogs in this match, but they had been underdogs in half of their tournament games, so it really didn't matter. Iraq dominated the match and stunned the Saudis 1-0 to do the impossible, and win the Asian Cup. This should not just make headlines in Jakarta, Indonesia(where the final was held), or throughout Iraq. It should make headlines around the world.

You have to put politics aside, and celebrate the most global sport in the world. Because Iraq has shown that nothing is impossible. They should be the model team of the world when it comes to determination. We should all be happy, no matter what nationality you are, that a war torn country could have a national soccer team that could not only participate, but win a soccer tournament.

Gees! They won! I'm remembering this for the 2007 ArmchairGM Sports Awards (Team of the Year, Underdog of the year etc.)

Iraq were not even in the hunt though, as you say. I think this is great.

Two logistical questions though:

  1. Why were Australia (in the Oceanic FIFA section) playing in the tournament?
  2. Why was a big Asian tournament being held in Indonesia, a place of zero football heritage with not much chance of qualifying, let alone winning, when it could have been held easily in any of the four favourites countries? (Or even China?)

They held it in Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam and Malaysia. And Indonesia has qualified for 1 world cup. In 1938, when they were known as the Dutch East Indies. Australia was in it because you have to remember the term Australasia.

Oh right, multi-venue, that makes more sense.

They made it in 1938, when Europe was on the brink of war, and a lot of nations boycotted the event (it was held in France, security fears etc.) And they got pasted 6-0 by Hungary (I'm reading), so they weren't exactly brilliant.

Okay, Australiasia, I get that, but why does that make them eligible for Asia? They're two different continents?

Imagine the tournament between Australia, New Zealand and Tasmania....maybe antarctica could get a team together to make it interesting.

Congratulations, Iraq, for winning the Asian cup. They were definitely the underdogs here. They get my vote for the Underdog of the Year...

Well done Iraq. It was big news over here in the UK. Some people are being a little cynical about it and asking if it was a fix. Either way, I hope that this will show people that Iraqi's are no different than the reat of us. Roll on FOOTBALL!

Well done Iraq, and Australia petitioned FIFA to leave Oceania and compete in Asia from now on. The reasoning I suppose is that the Socceroos would have an easier time qualifying for the World Cup since they would no longer have to play a play-off against a decent South American or Asian team as in the past.
