Am I the only one who is getting tired of the media tendency to overhype potential and short-term success into superstardom and a place in Cooperstown?

The real impetus for my opinion is Mike Lupica's recent Daily News article, wherein he posits that the subject of who has a better SS and 3B in New York is up for debate. Now I am admittedly and unabashedly a Yankee fan, but also consider myself to be fairly unbiased when it comes to facts. (intangibles being just that) I will admit that you can certainly make convincing arguements of some aspects of this debate; whether David Wright is having a better season than A-rod so far (yes), whether Reyes and Wright have been more effective than their Bronx counterparts (maybe), and who between the Yankees or Mets can expect a better second half from their stars. What I can't take is the ridiculous assertion that Wright and Reyes are better ballplayers than A-Rod and Jeter, or that teams would much rather have the Met duo than the Yankees players.

I believe that people are letting a great first-half on an overachieving Mets squad by Wright and Reyes blind them to the great last 10 years by Jeter and A-Rod. Seriously, lets check the black and white numbers. Take names out of the equation and tell me what GM isn't picking Jeter and Alex. No knock on the outstanding first halves, but lets call them what they are, 81 great games.

Put it another way:
Shaun Alexander or Ronnie Brown
Chris Paul or Jason Kidd
Sidney Crosby or Jaromir Jagr

Sure contracts and age play a role in some of these discussions, but on a purely skills-related basis you have to take proven performance over strong starts and potential. I think at the very least you have to wait a few years to ensure that half a season worth of play is really as indicative as it appears to be.

I don't think Wright and/or Reyes are overachieving.

I don't really think the Mets are as "overachieving" as you say they are.

I think Wright is as good as advertised. Reyes is over-rated, and will fall back to earth, and into the dog house of New York Mets fans, by the end of the 2007 baseball season.

Pedro and Glavine anchor their rotation, Steve Trachsel is counted on every 5 days, and Jose Lima has started more than once. I don't think its a fluke by any means, but as a Queens native I can tell you expectations for the Mets are currently being exceeded to the point that Met fans don't really want to talk about the team for fear of jinxing it.

If I was starting a team today, I'd pick Wright and Reyes. They're 24 and 23 years old respectively. Arod and Jeter are 31.

Yes, and one is a 2-time and reigning MVP 31 year old with nearly 500 HR and 1300 RBI, the other a gold glove shortstop with 4 rings, plus a WS MVP to his credit, who is on his way to 3000+ hits.

Those are career stats. That argument is faulted, we're picking players now to base teams off of. Both Jeter and ARod are very good players, but quite older than their NYM counterparts. Antawn Jamison has more career everything than Lebron James, but would anyone in their right mind make a personel decision based on career stats, absolutely not. Yes, ARod and Jeter are not Antawn Jamison, and Wright and Reyes are not Lebron James, but this example just goes to prove a point.

Reyes and Wright are not a fluke, and I think they will be better than the other 2.

"blind them to the great last 10 years by Jeter and A-Rod" Isn't this a debate as to who makes up the better combo? Jeter and A-Rod have only been together for two and a half years, not ten. Ten years ago A-Rod played 48 games and batted .232. And isn't the article saying who's the best so far this year, not ever? As a Cleveland fan, I know how easy it is to get defensive when your team is attacked, far better than a Yankees fan. It's ok if someone in the media says something bad about the Bronx Bombers every now and then, just go re-read your newspaper clippings from all the World Series wins and everything will be ok. :-)

cpcp- i think I get what you are saying, but this isnt like a 2b SS tandem who have to turn DPs on a regular basis, or shift and cover in conjunction on many plays.

Also, in the 2 1/2 years A-rod and Jeter have been together 1 won a gold glove and the other won the MVP of the entire league.

I'll post on the anti-Yankee bias in a new opinion piece.

Jeter/ARod and Wright/Reyes have both accomplished the samething. That thing is.....NOTHING! Both groups haven't won any WS titles together. Jeter won his before the Yankees became the team that grabs every single free agent in the market. So we really can't have this argument until one of the teams wins a WS.

I don't really understand your Crosby vs Jagr example: one is a rookie that has dominated at every level he's ever played and the other is one of the best hockey players of the modern era. It's like comparing Roger Clemens to Gustavo Chacin - it's way too soon to be comparing the new kid to the seasoned future-hall-of-famer.

Wright is a promising young star who has been highly touted at every level, Alex is one of the best baseball players of the modern era (and a good parallel to Jagr).
