In the WNBA, Dissing It Means Missing It...

Okay guys, what happens when you search a remarkable WNBA poster girl (Lauren Jackson, Sue Bird, Lisa Leslie, Diana Taurasi, Sheryl Swoopes - whoever fits the bill, actually) on Google? Well, aside from fansites, newspaper articles, and WNBA blogs, you also get the inevitable: WNBA rant columns.

As if this fact hasn't been overly stated enough, the WNBA has been around for 11 years. That's 11 years of drafting women's college ball's superstars, 11 years of women playing professionally for the sport they love, and 11 years of women and fans fighting to get the respect they deserve.

A staple in most critics' columns, the WNBA is the third attempt to establish a women's professional basketball league in the United States. The first two are the now defunct WBL and ABL.

Third time's the charm, right? 11 years is a sign of longevity and I think that just means the WNBA is just going to be around longer.

Due to my location right now, I have not watched a single WNBA game live. I have, although, watched games on WNBA's live webcasts and on rare occasions, on cable TV. On these broadcasts, I still feel the energy of the game, and people think I'm crazy when I'm yelling at the computer monitor when a ref makes a crazy call - and critics call the game boring. I am not someone who gets easily excited (I was once inches away from my favorite band and I didn't even scream, shout, or grin), but I'm one who savours the moment.

On the issue of the WNBA being boring, I think it's the dunks and flashy play (or lack thereof) that the critics are talking about. The average height of a WNBA guard is 5'7", and for the NBA it's 6'6". Women players don't get paid for dunking every night. They get paid for being team players who know their basketball and respect everyone in the business.

To some right now, I am making a pathetic effort of convincing people that the WNBA a worthy league to watch. I don't need to do that. The WNBA is a worthy sport to watch. Period. I'm not saying that you should watch the WNBA, but if you are so intent on dissing it without even watching a single game, then you're missing the excitement that the WNBA offers.

The WNBA loses money every year. This league has next to no appeal to any significant larger mass market and will only resurface in another Penny Marshall sports film once mercifully put down by the investors tired of watching their money get pissed away. Perhaps Hanks will be available again to play the all knowing drunk coach. And keep comments about my mother off this forum. Aren't you dead yet?

First - the average height for WNBA players is definitely more than 5'7"... they're taller than you think... there's only a dozen or so players under 5'6" in the league, hard to believe the AVERAGE would be just an inch more

I've LONG been a staunch supporter of the WNBA. Seriously, for a long time...

They are the world's greatest athletes at their game!

People who have issues with the WNBA don't know basketball and have more issues with themselves... (read: dudes with no game and inferiority complexes)

And coming from a guy who CAN dunk, it's just two points... woo. Most "dunkers" in the NBA aren't very good all-around players...

I have been planning an article covering a game for some while... I was gonna go last week to a Mercury game but Cappy was hurt and Diana Taurasi was suspended, so ummmm... no. Lauren Jackson! and the Storm are coming to Phoenix in a couple weeks. I WILL be there!

What Beast said and cap alluded to is the problem: The quality of play is just not at the level of the NBA, and it's not close. I truly wonder if the 2006-07 Florida Gators could beat the WNBA champions. I think, in the very least, it'd be a good game.

That's a huge problem, because the WNBA is trying to attract basketball fans. That's why the league uses basically the same rules as the NBA and doesn't play during the same time of year. The (W)NBA believes that there is one set of fans.

They're wrong. They need to think broader (pardon the unintentional pun). Think "sports fans," not basketball fans.

I'm in New York. I *might* watch the Liberty if they're good and the Knicks and Rangers stink. There's no way I'm watching the Liberty when the Mets are playing. And if you think I'm going to pay attention to the WNBA playoffs in September -- when football season starts and baseball is in its pennant race -- you're certifiable.

The other thing the WNBA needs to change is its rules. Make it a different sport, fundamentally, than the men's game. Not sure how, but how about going 3-on-3, and going with a shorter (or even half!) court, and widening the key and strictly enforcing the three second rule? Make it a faster, more shooter-friendly game.

On the business end, bring back the "territorial" picks from the old NBA draft rules. As a UConn fan, I'd be at least casually interested to see how a team of UConn All-Stars fared against similar teams. Keep your core fan constituency involved, ya know?

Extremely different rules are not a good idea - it is far too gimmicky to be successful in the long run. Some might say having women playing basketball is far too gimmicky, but a half court 3 on 3 game is a surefire failure.

A dunk is 2 points. No more, no less... And a dunk isn't going to happen if you can't get positioning.

BTW - the BEST boxing out gets the BEST positioning on the court - it requires a LOWER center of gravity - like a woman's.

I've been to WNBA games and I thoroughly enjoyed them. I CAN'T stand it when dumbfacks yap about how they are so good they could beat a WNBA player in basketball. These are usually schmucks who never wore a uni or stepped on a court.

If the WNBA sucks so much, why hasn't ONE single pro athlete I ever talked with say anything bad about it? Every person I ask has said, "yeah they're good".

If Pro Male Athletes can respect their game, why can't regular stupid people like these schmucks give them respect?

Men in general need to wake up and realize that their egos are stronger than their abilities. Face reality, it hurts less than than having reality face it for you. Jennie Finch struck out MLB players 30 years after Billy Jean King won her Battle of the Sexes. But people to dumb to sign up and log in are better basketball players than Diana Taurasi? Uhhhh, What?

Exactly, Jut. Taht's fine - it's why I don't watch many football games anymore - the product is deteriorated.

But as far as seeing them in person, the WNBA is $ for $ far and away the best. I saw a FINALS game and got drunk and sat near the suns cheerleaders (who were fans in "street" clothes) and I didn't spend $40. You can't beat it.

And if you like seeing thousands of babes at the same place and same time (and have the power to look right through a granny dyke) - go to a WNBA game.

And I disagree. I've seen Sue Bird go on a 7-7 3's hot streak for a quarter and a half. I've watched Diana Taurasi launch and make WAY too many (beyond the NBA line) 3 pointers. I've seen Cappie Pondexter bust everyone's ankles on one play then muscle in points like she was a fundamental spawn of Allen Iverson and Charles Barkley and TAKE OVER the game.

They are VERY entertaining. And think about one more thing: What do you think a stadium full of Women and girls screaming sounds like?

I said "more times than not Skill beats athleticism". The guys in the NBA aren't any more athletic than many of the ballers at the parks and gyms. There are great athletes all over the world NOT playing NBA ball. NBA ballers understand, know and play the game better.

Or do you think the Fred Hoibergs, Sam Cassells and Jason Kaponos of the world are Athletic? I think it's safe to say they are more "skilled".

And so you know I HAVE played ball with several guys in the NBA. You'll NEVER convince me that I'm not more athletic than Rick Brunson, but he spent nearly a decade in the NBA while I sat at home and watched him, reminiscing how I got a cheezy rebound dunk over him.
