Impressive Feats

Over the past couple of days, those who like baseball have seen two really amazing performances on the diamond.

On Sunday, Johan Santana pitched a neck-turner, going 8.0 innings with 2 hits, 0 earned runs, 0 walks, and 17 strikeouts against the Rangers.

I'm not sure what's cooler, how many people he fanned or the fact that he did it in 8.0 innings!

Then last night, relatively forgotten Garret Anderson went 4-6 with two homers, 10 rbi and 3 runs scored. This brought his season totals to 8 homers and 50 rbi.

Holy hellacious hounds that is one serious outlier! You'd expect such a performance by A-rod, or maybe even Anderson's running mate Vladimir Guerrero.

Actually, Rodriguez drove in 10 runs two years ago with the Yankees......against the Angels, the last time someone dipped into double-digit ribbies.

So, discussion time...what's more impressive? Johan's mow-down of Texas or Anderson singlehandedly driving in more runs than the Yankees nine?

I think that Santana statline wins, mainly because it's all on his shoulders while Anderson had no bearing on his teammates being on base at the time of his at-bats.

Ten or more RBI in a game has been done something like six or seven times in ML history, 17 strikeouts over 50 times. Now maybe if that candyass Twins manager had let Santana pitch the ninth we could be talking about this, but the answer is clear, Anderson wins.

Just checked, Anderson was the 12th to reach 10 RBI in a game.

This is a really good topic...I'll have to go with Santana. With Anderson, there is some luck involved, as in how many guys are on base when you hit. With Santana, it's just pure skill involved, not much luck, with the exception of the team you're facing (I guess he sort of got lucky facing Texas, but whatev). Santana is more impressive.

I can see both sides, but look at it like this:

Yes, Santana struck out 17. He did it against a free swinging (4 guys with 83+ Ks on the year.) By that token, when Kerry Wood fanned 20 back in 98, we should have anointed him as the second coming of Koufax, Ryan, etc.

Anderson drove in 10 runs. Yes, you are at the mercy of having guys on base, but you also have to take advantage of those opportunities and drive them in.

I go with Anderson.

Its no contest. Anderson helped beat the Yankees. Winner: Anderson.
