If an athlete wrote an autobiography, whose would you buy and why?

I would buy Babe Ruth's, so I could see what it was like to live in his time and be as famous as he was. --Annadrome

I have bought several. I read David Beckham's "Autobiography." I also read Kurt Angle's. With Angle, I was way much more interested in reading about his time at Clarion University and his amateur wrestling career and training for the 1996 Olympics than I was his WWF career. I read The Rock's book as well, his stories about his time at Miami and in the CFL were interesting. I also read Rulan Gardner's book. His wrestling career and family history is quite interesting.

The best autobiography I have read is by Charlie George. Now dear old Charlie scored one of the most famous goals in Arsenal history in the 1971 FA Cup Final. The autobiography really ins't all that insightful but it does recall an age when the sport was not dominated by corporate sponsors and huge money. Charlie does relate some fun stories about his time in the game, light reading but fun.

Athletes always write autobiographies over here. More than 1 per person, usually. I liked Dickie Bird, who was a quirky cricket umpire of the last 30 years. A great read.

Manny Ramirez. In a related question, his HOF-induction speech is going to be amazing.

He is a .313 career hitter! What do you mean doesn't hit for average? 490 HR, 2200 Hits, 1600 RBI, and he is still only 35! He has got another 5 years in him... doesn't hit for average??? WTF are you smoking?

Manny has 2,209 career hits, 490 HRs, 1,604 RBI, .313 BA, .409 OBP, .593 SLG. He's hit .290+ every year since 1995. He has 24 HR and 59 RBI in 88 post-season games. 11 time All-Star, 2 time Hank Aaron Award winner, 2004 World Series MVP, 9 time Silver Slugger, 8 seasons in the top 10 for MVP voting. 79th highest batting average ever, 37th highest OBP ever, 10th highest OPS ever, 8th highest slugging ever, 26th most home runs, 18th most RBI. He could very easily retire with 3,000 hits, 550 HRs, 2,000 RBI, a career average over .300 and a career OPS over 1.000. Not only is Manny a Hall of Famer, he should get in on his first ballot.

Babe Ruth had several couple biographies written as well as starred in movies as himself (as well as the Gehrig-inspired and horribly edited Pride of the Yankees) He also said before he died that he should have had two autobiographies - one for the kids and one for adults.

Seriously though, Babe Ruth is a very good choice. I would read his autobiography anyday. I'd love to find out more about his life than what I already know.

I remember writing a biography about someone who influenced/changed US history for my US history class. I chose Babe Ruth, and it was a really easy assignment for me. It was extremely easy to talk about him, but the truth is I was just blabbing on and on. I know that he went to a boarding school, and started smoking and drinking before his teenage years, but I don't know exactly how he was different compared to everyone else. I got many perspectives about this, and I would've loved to read his. Good choice, Annadrome. That'd probably be my choice as well.

If not Babe Ruth, then I'd probably read Hank Aaron's or Jackie Robinson's.

I recently read John McEnroe's. It was pretty good, but a little shallow. He basically writes about all the big tournaments he played in with a little of his off-court activities mixed in.
