If It Weren't For That Kazmir Trade, This Would Be The Worst Trade In History

25
Vote

by Dan Lewis

The New York Mets have, inexplicably, traded Lastings Milledge to the Washington Nationals for Ryan Church and Brian Schneider.

That, sadly, is neither a joke or a typo.

Omar Minaya... *are* you thinking? No longer is the question "What" are you thinking, but simply, "are" you thinking? Apparently not.

Yes, Milledge's trade value is rather stymied, but who cares? Let's say you kept Milledge and he failed, miserably -- .220, 8 homers, 15 stolen bases in, oh, 400 AB. On potential alone, after the 2008 season, what could you get for Milledge?

I'd say Church and Schneider sounds about right.

That -- that -- is how bad this trade is.

I don't get it. I really just don't get it. Minaya must think Ryan Church is much better than I think he is. I think he just traded Milledge for Ben Johnson and a mediocre catcher.

Minaya is showing that he values players for their trade value, not their playing skill. Milledge's trade value is probably equal to Church's, because the Mets did a bang-up job of trashing Milledge's reputation. So Minaya sees this as "hey, free mediocre catcher!"

A few years ago Church was untouchable by the Nats. I think long term Church will be equal to if not better than Milledge.

After downgrading at catcher by letting Paul LoDuca walk and acquiring Johnny Estrada it makes no sense for the Mets to downgrade even further at catcher by acquiring Brian Schneider who hit 6 home runs and drove in 54 runs in 408 at bats. Jesus Flores the backup for Nationals hit 4 home runs and drove in 25 runs in only 180 at bats so Schneider only hit 2 more home runs in 228 more at bats showing he won't be much help to the Mets even if as the backup catcher. Ryan Church with 15 home runs and 70 RBI's may play alright for Mets. Don't know why Omar Minaya would give up Lastings Milledge for so little in return. If they traded him to get Santana I could have understood his reasons for trading him but to give him up for two run of the mill type players is a travesty.

Schneider is a solid, if not excellent, defensive catcher. That's where is value is. But I agree otherwise. This is awful.

It just has to be that someone wanted Church and not Milledge. But I still don't get it. Ryan Church couldn't win the starting job for the Nationals, how could he be better than Milledge?

Maybe Omar is thinking that if he can put together a team of 9 catchers, they all can use a catcher's mitt on the field.... seriously, is it me or is he trying to acquire every former Expo that played for him.

Oh my god...this is horrendous. Remember when they could've got Zito for Milledge at the deadline a year and a half ago, and didn't do it, and lost Game 7 of the NLCS with 3-13 Oliver Perez on the mound? There's no way this was the best deal they could've made...they could've probably gotten Blanton for Milledge and a fringe guy. They did need a catcher badly, but this trade makes them significantly worse.

its not like church is truly openly preaching this...quite literally represents billions of people...most of whom do believe this...

Really, he's merely stating a fact by the standards of quite a few christian religions, its not really hate speech at all, especially considering their goal of converting (saving) rather than simply condemning themselves...

I may disagree with church (pun!), wholeheartedly, but that doesn't mean what he said is incorrect (per se) and un-PC...

I think MJD has it right... Actually, this reminds me of the episode of the simpsons where homer stops going to church...his rational, among other things, was because you don't know which religion is right and practicing the wrong one might "condemn" you anyway...

True. I should have mentioned the hyperbolic absurdity of this headline. The second-worst trade in history? This isn't even the second-worst METS trade in history. Remember them giving up Nolan Ryan? This was a bad trade, but not even close to the worst in history. For my money, this isn't even as bad as the Astros last year giving up Buchholz, Hirsh and Taveras for Jennings.

Way to early to call him a bust, but I still have to say that I don't see why Mets fans think Milledge is worth so much when he hasn't actually done anything. He's had chances at the major league level, but the Mets kept demoting him this last year. And there's a reason. He's far from being a bust, but Mets fans seemed to think he was the second coming of Ken Griffey, Jr. That was just crazy.

Kwitt, I don't think the Mets would have had Zito for Milledge last year considering the A's were in contention and lost in the ALCS. But yeah, they definitely could have used him as a chip to get more then and they refused. Stock drops a little, they panic and do something stupid. Not a dumb as the Kazmir for Zambrano trade unless you figure Jim Duquette was doing that to make the playoffs somehow with a bad team and save his job. This one doesnt even make sense in that angle.

I don't think this is the worst trade in history. I mean I would focus more on starting pitching than hitting. We don't know what you'll get from Pedro,El Duque. Maine was good last year, Perez was hot and cold and Glavine is gone. They should've kept Lo Duca and tried to get Haren or Santana. What they should've really done is get rid of some guys on the team. Get rid of the bullpen, Glavine and maybe Reyes based on his lackluster, pitiful performance. Mota and Glavine are gone but we still need more help. I would get rid of Humber and Pelfrey. The Mets young pitching never works out. Paul Wilson. Bill Pulsipher. I just think the Mets need to make some moves because the team they got now isn't making the playoffs.

I think the AJ Pierzynski trade was worse:

Giants get: AJ (who they lose the next year to Chicago) Twins get: Liriano, Bonser, Garza (who becomes Delmon Young and a few others), and the ability to start Mauer.

So they get a starting CF, 2 All-Stars (provided Liriano's healthy). a starting pitcher, and all for a catch that they don't end up keeping
