If Healthy Pennington is Best Option

As a new writer on this site, I had to give my opinion on the biggest situation regarding the New York Jets, my team, going into the new season. That situation is the QB situation. There was a lot of discussion in NY as to whether or not the Jets would take one of the big 3 quarterbacks in the draft, or go elsewhere with the fourth pick. They decided to take Ferguson, lineman, with that 4th pick and it was a good move. As long as Chad Pennington is healthy, he is the man to lead this team to glory.

Of course, the shoulder is a concern. If anyone would say otherwise, they would be completely ignorant. However, if the shoulder is playable, Pennington has to start. For one thing, even healthy, his arm strength is not his strong point. During his 2002 season where he lead the league is passer rating, he was not the guy airing it out 60 yards in the air. Clearly you don't have to be, because Joe Montana wasn't either.

What Chad Pennington is, is the thinking man's quarterback. His success is prided on finding the right receiver in the right place at the right time. Hitting them in stride allowing them to get yards after the catch. That isn't born from arm strength per se. That is born upstairs, and Chad will never lose that. He was a Rhode Scholar finalist at Marshall University, and has been watching game film since he was a child. That cannot be taught, and they need Pennington to run this team.

He also brings an air of confidence when he is on the field that the Jets, and their fans aren't used to. He brings that swagger that you need to have to lead a team to victory.

Furthermore, I can't trust this team to Patrick Ramsey long term. I do think the guy has talent, and didn't get a fair chance in Washington. Gibbs made the switch to Brunell fairly quickly. However, even though the guy has talent, he makes too many bad decisions. Ramsey doesn't put his team in position to win enough, and that is not what we need in a quarterback.

The Jets are a talented team, with the potential to return to the playoffs. For that to happen, they need Chad Pennington.

I couldn't agree more. The Jets best option was Pennington from the end of last season till now. They get 2 stud O-lineman and a relatively young QB that they know has the ability to play. There's less risk in Pennington than drafting one of the 2 QBs left (Young was gone by the 4th pick). If they want to win now, Pennington will have to do it. I like their pickup of Ramsey, he's a good backup, but not a starter.

Banking on Pennington is a huge risk and now they have no insurance. I thought they should've singed Leinart, worse case then they would've been in a similar situation as Chargers with Brees/Rivers. They really need to sign someone like K. Collins.

They brough in Ramsey as insurance. He's cheap and decent. I wouldn't want him to start but he's a good backup and better than collins. Drafting Leinart would have cost them Ferguson and theres no way Leinart plays this year, legitimately.

I think at this point the Jets QB situation is a lottery. If Pennington is healthy, he will be the starting QB. When he is at his best he does not turn the ball over, runs an efficient offense, and has enough of an arm to make an occassional big play. I like everything about Patrick Ramsey's game except his head. He has a big arm, can take a hit and make all the plays. However, starting off the NFL under Steve Spurrier really stunted his growth and he still has a lot to learn. For a 6th rd pick, he was exactly the type of insurance the Jets needed. He is only signed through this year, so it gives the Jets decision makers enough time to decide whether he is worthy of a longer committment. Realistically though both Pennington and Ramsey are only around for the next two years. This gives the Jets enough time to develop their QB of the future Kellen Clemmens.

I don't know about that- at least Collins has been successful starting, I'd rahter Ramsey as #3. What's the risk of bring Collins and Ramsey on board and fight for bkup job? Look what happened last yr, with Fiedler going down.

MetsDevilsJets, great point about Kellen Clemens, I forgot about him. They also have Brooks Bollinger (hahahaha). They made some good choices in the draft to fix some of the holes. This team needs more time and not a rookie QB like Leinart

Good pt christof. Pennington was struggling when he was on the field, granted partly due to being injured, but surely partly due to supporting cast.
