Ichiro gets 200th hit

Ichiro homered off Roger Clemens in today's game for his second hit of the game and his 200th hit of the year.  Ichiro has now reached the 200-hit plateau in each of his seven seasons in the majors since coming over from Japan in 2001, including his 2004 season where he broke the MLB record with 262 hits.  His batting average over that span has been .333, the best active BA in the majors.

I wouldn't call Ichiro the best hitter in the majors, because he doesn't hit for the power that guys like Alex Rodriguez and Albert Pujols do.  However, it is pretty much undebatable that he is currently the best in baseball at getting hits, in a Tony Gwynn sense.  This was just his sixth homer of the season, and he's slugging a relatively mediocre .434, which is right in line with his career average.  However, he's been extremely valuable to the Mariners this year, both on the basepaths (37 SB and just 3 CS) and in the field (playing a very solid center field).

I don't know how long Ichiro is going to be a great hitter; he's 33 years old right now, and his speed will likely begin to decline in the next two years or so.  Ichiro gets probably more infield hits than just about anyone else in the game, so this should hurt his batting average as well as his baserunning and range in center.  Still, Ichiro can clearly hit the ball well, which is a skill that never goes out of style.

Trivia Time: As I mentioned before, Ichiro now has seven consecutive years of 200+ hits.  This tied him for the AL record, and puts him one shy of the overall MLB record.  Who is he tied with for the AL record, and who holds the MLB record?

I'm going to go out on a limb and say Wade Boggs? for the AL record. As far as the MLB record, are we talking since 1900, or before?

Wade Boggs is correct, with 7 seasons. The MLB record can be from any years.

Hmmm... I'm going to try and figure it out myself for a little while longer (haha), before I resort to google-ing the answer, because I honestly have no clue.

btw, Ichiro has ALOT of power. He doesn't like to play the game that way, he feels he can contribute more as a singles and average guy than as a power hitter (which would lower his average signifficantly). If he stays back and swings differently than his copyright swing, he hits for a lot more power. He puts on a show occassionally during BP.

It's just a testament to how great of an athlete Ichiro is.

Yes, I know that's true...what I meant was that Ichiro doesn't hit for a lot of power in games. I've heard that he could be a good middle-of-the-order hitter if he wanted to, maybe .290/.350/.500 with 30 homers a year, but that's not how he plays. Honestly, I'm not sure which is more valuable...

Someone I never would have guessed. I guess I'm really not that familiar with pre-1900s players anyway. Great question though.

I hope Ichiro gets 200 hits next year and in 2009 then. I STILL think he can pull it off.

Why is Clemens still pitching? If the Yanks tossed away the Moose, why not do the same for Clemens?

Let's see...over the past month, Clemens' ERA is 3.91, Mussina's is 10.90. That's a pretty good reason...

Useless in what sense? He's given them almost 100 innings with a 4.15 ERA. Who else would've pitched those innings? Chase Wright? Josh Towers? Clemens has probably been worth two or three wins to the Yankees this year...

Too much emphasis is put on hitting homeruns in today's game. I really like a guy like Ichiro because he does whatever will help his team most. In his case, it's getting on base. I'm a fan of the Phillies, and Ryan Howard is a great power hitter, but he strikes out too much. It is a rally killer. Whereas a guy like Chase Utley can do it all, as can Jimmy Rollins. The stat for total bases should be held much higher in my opinion.

Ichiro is more like Don Mattingly then Jeff Bagwell. Guess that makes Ichiro a HOFer?

oops, forgot to copy it over... "To tell the truth, I'm not excited to go to Cleveland, but we have to," Ichiro said through an interpreter. "If I ever saw myself saying I'm excited going to Cleveland, I'd punch myself in the face, because I'm lying."

Ichiro should already be pre-signed for Baseball Tonight immediately after he retires from MLB. That is outstanding (and honest) commentary!

He's a great hitter, but 3,000 hits seems like a stretch...he has 1552 right now, and he's 33 years old. If he kept up this pace, he'd break the record when he is 40, and it's foolish to expect him to keep this up; first of all, his speed will decline, so he'll get fewer infield hits, and second of all, he'll probably get dropped from the leadoff spot eventually (after his speed goes), so he'll then get fewer at-bats. He's certainly got a shot at it, but I'm not sure it's extremely likely.

Well...only one person has ever gotten 200 hits at the age of 40 (Sam Rice in 1930, an excellent era for getting base hits, by the way; Ty Cobb is second with 175). Paul Molitor is the only person with 200 hits at the age of 39. Only three people have done it at age 37 and three again at 38. The most hits anybody's ever had at the age of 41 is 175 (Pete Rose), and only two other people are above 150. Nobody in the modern era has 150 hits at age 42...hell, only five other people even have 100. I'm not saying Ichiro can't get to 3,000, but he'll be battling history the whole way...

Congrats to Ichiro. I have been waiting the entire season for him to do this. He is just an amazing hitter, especially when can slap the ball and put it anywhere with such great hand eye coordination. Once again, Ichiro: congrats. You deserve to be in the Hall of Fame, in my opinion, if you keep this up.
