I wish I could do that

I was just on ESPN.com reading an article about the teenagers in the NHL. WOW. That is all I can say. I wish I could be doing that.

I am a 19 year old college student, and I play hockey for my schools team. I remember what it was like going from youth hockey to high school hockey. It was a much quicker, harder hitting and more intense. I am now making the transition from high school varsity hockey to college hockey and wow. The difference is amazing. It is faster, harder hitting, and much more intense. Our schedule is pretty intense and keeps me going all the time. I can’t imagine a division 1 or division 2 schedule. But what I can not imagine is being this age and playing in the NHL. I follow hockey and watch it all the time and wow, that game is quick, the guys never stop, and I can not imagine getting hit. All I can say is I wish I was doing what some of the 18,19,20 year old kids in the NHL are doing. And I wish them luck and respect the commitment that they have to hockey. And by the way… yes I wish I was that good, but I am not.

Sure, some of it is god given talent that some will always have, and others will never have. But a lot of it is hard work, passion, dedication and studying. I've played college soccer and I'm moving on to semi-pro. I wasn't a big time recurit, or a local star at my position, but I knew how to max out my contribution to a team. I also never forgot that soccer, no matter who's on the field consist of "11 v 11 with 1 ball". I know my role and my job on the field and I know how to do it well but I'm barley physically talented enough to get the opportunities given. You just have to take full advantage of every chance to improve and make the most of every chance your given to get to a higher level. You can make it as high as up hockey's todem pole as you desire if you keep in mind some of those same things.
