I feel like Suzyn Waldman

"Oh my goodness gracious! Of all the dramatic things that I have ever seen!"

The following is according to WEEI radio in Boston...

  • The Celtics and Timberwolves have submitted their trade to the league for approval. In case you've been in a cave for the past 36 hours, the Celtics get KG for Al Jefferson, Gerald Green, Ryan Gomes, Theo Ratliff, Sebastian Telfair, and two first round draft picks. Kevin Garnett has left his cruise vacation, and has just landed in Boston for a physical. Garnett has also agreed to a 3-year contract extension, keeping him in Boston through the 2010-2011 season. Paul Pierce has flown into Boston also to greet him. The Celtics have scheduled a press conference for 6pm. Garnett, Pierce and Ray Allen are all expected to be in attendance.
  • Everybody and their mom are reporting that the Red Sox have acquired Texas Rangers closer Eric Gagne in exchange for AAA CF David Murphy, Gulf Coast League outfielder Engel Beltre, and starter Kason Gabbard. Gagne waived his no-trade clause in order to come to Boston.

I can't remember a day like this. Ever. I am stuck at work updating the Globe's Sox blog every five seconds to get this stuff, but luckily my boss is gone for the day so I should be there for the rest of the day.

I love getting Gagne. Looooooooooooooooove it. As long as Gagne is cool with platooning with Okajima in 8th and closing when Paps needs a rest (which could be the reason he doesn't waive his no-trade clause), this could be fabulous. Paps could even make the move back to starter, if they elect to hold on to Gagne (I would hate this, but I would eventually accept it).

As far as what the Sox are giving up, Murphy is a former 1st round pick, lopped in the AAA outfield with the untouchable Jacoby Ellsbury and another good outfield prospect, Brandon Moss. With Gabbard, he most likely would have gone to the bullpen upon Curt Schilling's return to the rotation anyway. He relies on finesse more than anything else, so he is, as much as it hurts to say this because he's pitched well, expendable. I know absolutely nothing about Engel Beltre, except that he and Adrian have the same last name.

Good God this is exciting. With my luck, all of this will go up in smoke. We could have the knee trifecta between KG, Pierce and Allen (KG tears the ACL, Pierce tears the PCL, Allen tears the MCL) no less than 10 games into the season, and Gagne's shoulder could explode for no apparent reason. But the Celtics still have...umm...Rajon Rondo, and the Red Sox still have Paps, OkeyDoke, and MDC to take care of the bullpen.

I'm surprised Manny Delcarmen isn't involved in any of these trades. If we get Gagne, and we have Oki and Papelbon, what's the point of having Manny Delcarmen in? If these trades happen, expect Jermaine Dye to be in Boston and Delcarmen on the ChiSox or something...

The Sox are adamant about holding onto Manny Delcarmen, otherwise the Dye deal would have gone down yesterday. Delcarmen will probably be used for mop up duty, or pitching the 7th like he has often this season. There's also been talk of Gagne and Paps "sharing" the closer role, which would be interesting.

Delcarmen wasn't supposed to be our primary RH set-up guy at all. Timlin's been hopping back and forth from the DL and Donnelley (remember him?) just started throwing again. You hang on to Delcarmen because he's young, he throws hard, and he could be a staple in the bullpen for a long time, not just this season. And also, with guys like Schilling, Wakefield, and Lester now at the back of our rotation, we're going to need more than 3 top pitchers finishing games. Papelbon, Okajima, and Gagne can't pitch the 7th, 8th, and 9th every single day.

Exactly, that's why you hang onto Delcarmen, and that's why sending Craig Hansen would have been okay with the organization.

"As long as AI can coexist with Carmelo this could be fabulous."

"As long as Mark Prior and Kerry Wood can stay off the DL this could be fabulous."

A lot of things COULD be fabulous. Will they? Not likely. If Gagne isn't the Sox closer by April look for him to cause trouble.

This pretty much guarentees that Paps will move to starter next year because there is no way Gagne is waiving his no-trade clause without the Sox assuring him of the spot behind the curtain. I don't think that Gagne causing problems in the club house is the issue as a result. The issue, his injuries. This can either be great for Yankees fans or a disaster. Gagne has had 2 Tommy John surgeries and one surgery to fix herniated disks in his back. Can you really rely on him? Honestly? Wait... don't answer that question now, wait a week for the excitement to calm down and then answer.

With the Gagne move, I think you're right, I can slightly concede my stance of Paps being THE closer. But it is yet to be seen if the Sox will hold to Gagne long term; reliability is, like you said, an issue with him.

I'm hoping the table balances out by Boston losing 6 in a row and the Yankees winning 6 in a row. Ehh... these are the cons that sports fanaticism can bring...

The KG thing pisses me off more than anything else. The Red Sox are a playoff team anyway, they have a lot of good players on their team so Gagne, I could shrug off. The Patriots, I actually like. But the Celtics, I could rely on to be a crappy team that let Bostonians down every year. Not that the Celts will win a championship but they are contenders which is bad enough. And I liked KG, now that he's on the Celts I'll have to root against him which sucks as well. This is almost as bad as if the Eagles picked up Steve Smith and LDT in the same offseason.

MVP candidate last year too. The reason I want him the most is his pop, he's got 19 homeruns and has gotten hot since the All-Star break. And he's an insurance policy for Drew. And he can play 1st to give Youk a rest. And he can DH if they want to DL Ortiz to have him healthy for the playoffs.

Dye's been tremendously unlucky in terms of BABIP this year, which is why his average and OBP are so low. But if you look at his underlying skills, he's basically the same player he was last year, when he hit 44 HR and posted a .315/.385/.622 line. His power's declined a bit, and his speed has fallen off, but he's mostly the same hitter, on top of being a good defender.

I don't like BABIP to measure a hitter's "luck." If hitters hit the ball hard, and it's right at someone, then that's bad luck, but it evens out over the course of several hundred at-bats. It might be costing him a few points on his average and OBP, but not the .080 difference this year compared to last year. Dye also has a career OBP of .337, which really doesn't impress me.

Here's the only stat that makes me feel okay about not getting Dye:

2007 OBP JD Drew: .354 Jermaine Dye: .295

It's so important for guys in this offense to get on base. Even if it's by not getting a hit, EVER, and still walking, I'll tolerate it.

It really doesn't even out over several hundred at-bats, or even 500+ AB; luck is simply a huge aspect in determining a player's statistical output. Fortunately, tools like BABIP can help cut through the distortions of bad luck... Every player establishes their own hit rate on balls in play, which is a function of his bat control, speed, etc. As the sample size of a career increases, this rate stabilizes for each player over time, and any significant departure from a player's established hit rate can be almost completely attributed to good or bad luck. Dye's career BABIP is .301, and he is at .242 this year. It's true that his speed has declined, but this 59-point difference is mostly due to bad luck. Other factors have influenced Dye's poor overall production this year (namely, the fact that his power took a big dive), but there's no denying that bad luck has played a big role.
Davis21wylieMVP

As for Dye's patience and OBP, it's true that his walk rate is rather average, but his slugging % can offset this when the hits start falling. And he's a plus defender with a good arm. I'm not saying he'd be a huge upgrade over Drew, or that we should have acquired him, but he'd be a good player to have around, because that awful OBP is just an aberration.
RawbeezeitzMajor Leaguer

Score 1+-
But isn't BABIP more to measure a pitcher's bad luck, not a hitter's? Couldn't you argue that Dye isn't hitting the ball as well when he makes contact? This also could be a reason why his power isn't there as much as it has been. He seems to be hitting more doubles, and less homeruns, which leads me to believe that when he hits the ball hard, fewer of them are leaving the ballpark, so he isn't hitting them as well as he had in the past.
Davis21wylieMVP

Score 0+-
That's true, batters do have more control over the outcome of batted balls than pitchers do. And Dye is clearly making worse contact: his LD%/GB%/FB% this year is 17.6/36.3/46.1, versus basically 20/39/41 in 2005-06. But the league average is 18/38/44 with a BABIP of .302, so his hit rate should by all rights be just just a hair less than that based on his hitting distribution. Instead, it's ridiculously low and unlucky, meaning it will eventually regress toward .300, and his BA/OBP will follow.
