I just don’t get it:
First off, welcome to anyone still checking us out from the Deadspin’s link to Hermano’s Bob Costas/fuck you money post.
Something really strange is going on, and no I don’t mean the guy suing McDonalds for 10mil for putting cheese on his burger. What I really just don’t get is what is going on in the NBA.a
By now we all know about Penny (36) signing with the heat, we all know about Reggie Miller (42 this month) likely taking the Steve Kerr role over in Boston, and probably know about The Oak (43) and even Allan Houston (37) talking about a comeback.
I don’t pretend to blame the players, I mean if someone wanted to give you 2 million to do something that doesn’t involve a rape stand you’d likely be interested. The players all need the excitement and challenge and certainly wouldn’t mind the money.
But what doesn’t make any sense is the fact that NBA teams are interested in these guys. Seriously, are you telling me that a team couldn’t find someone younger and more athletic than the Oak? (And yes I know the Oak is still in good shape, but the guy hasn’t played in three years and is 43 years old.) Hell Houston sucked the last 3-4 years of his career and famously has a part of the new collective bargaining agreement named after him which allows teams to pay a guy to leave them alone.
The fact that these guys still think that they can play, and teams seem to be agreeing, further proves the point that the current level of play in the NBA sucks (also note that the two teams that have expressed interest in any of the geriatric players mentioned above are in the Eastern Conference). There’s a serious problem when the defending Eastern Conference champions are a one man team (sorry Cavs fans – but Lebron certainly rules), and the new favorite for this season is a three man team.
If so many people can come straight out of retirement and be useful, doesn’t this also limit the effectiveness of the pro-age limit argument? Wouldn’t the league benefit more providing younger players who are possibly half Penny’s age those 10 minutes a game that Penny’ll play allowing them to gain experience that will help them become better players?
I don’t know about you, but I don’t want the NBA senior tour. I want younger players contributing minutes.
But on the bright side, Butch McRae and Neon get to team back up. Hopefully they’ll have the same chemistry as they did at Western State University.
I just don’t get it.
Coming in next week’s I Just Don’t Get It: we continue looking at the NFL/NCAA football argument from a little different perspective
