What has baseball come to when the Detroit Tigers could easily be the World Series Champions?
What has baseball come to when the Detroit Tigers could easily be the World Series Champions?

This can't be true. It can't be happening. There's just no way it's possible. Even in a salary cap-free sport. Even in the sport with the most out-of-control contracts in any business anywhere in the world.

How is it possible that the Detroit Tigers are looking like an easy World Series favorite.

Just days ago I was still buried in my stubborness that the Tigers were the biggest joke since the 1997 and 2003 Florida Marlins, but I didn't expect the Tigers to have the same punch line once all is said and done.

The more I listen to and watch the NLCS, however, it's becoming clear that the Tigers aren't just telling knock-knock jokes at open mic night, they're ready to sell out Madison Square Garden.

Perhaps I should leave the stand-up comparisons and talk baseball.

The Detroit Tigers are at home stretching their legs, visiting their chiropractors and chilling with their families while the St. Louis Cardinals and New York Mets are in a fight for their lives where both teams are trying to find a way to field enough players.

If the Mets win game seven, they'll head into the World Series without a pitcher to speak of. The Cardinals will limp in with a much-aggrieved offense. Neither team looks like they'll be ready to take on a well-rested and generally young Tigers' team.

At this point, I'll enjoy what should be a terrific Game 7. After that though, the joke's on us baseball fans. It could be two World Series sweeps in a row by the AL Central.

And once again, it will be a joke this Tribe fan just won't get.

Actually, El Duque is ready. So El Duque, Glavine, and Maine would go games 1 to 3. And their offense has not exploded all playoffs, which means if they survive the Cardinals after only averaging 3-4 runs a game, Tigers could be in big trouble if they get back to normal and start scoring 5 to 6 runs a game

I don't think the Tigers are afraid of any of those pitchers, especially not John freaking Maine.

If the Mets get desperate, which is very possible, El Duque will pitch in game 7.

Seepie, I think you are looking at this through Tribe colored glasses.

They built the team right. They let the young, good power arms develop while they took lumps and racked up losses. They built their staff around their stadium. That's what you're supposed to do.

Then they had to add some legitimacy, they went after Magglio and HAD to overpay him to get him in Motown and that monstrous stadium. Everyone called Mags crazy for signing. NO ONE else offered Pudge a multi-year contract, Guillen was dumped on them (for Ramon Santiago??!?) and they overpaid for Kenny Rogers, but he was brought in to be the vet on the staff... which was a missing piece.

Leyland was the coup. A manager's manager. A baseball lifer with the right experience. The Phillies could have had him but were afraid to give him personnel input (Isn't that what a manager is there every day for?)

They didn't buy the pennant. The overpaid to get the pieces they needed, but that's what ALL successful teams do. Develop young talent, trade vets for good prospects, get leaders at the skill positions then fill in the gaps in free agency.

Credit Dave Dombrowski for being one of the few baseball minds that doesn't overthink, overanalyze and does what he has to win... (he built some pretty good Expos teams in the early 90's and the '97 Marlins too, afterall)

they've had a charmed season (except for a last week of the reg. season blip) and teams that have years like this win World Series... this is nothing new to baseball (see Cincy '90 as a great example that reminds me of these Tigers or the Blue Jays of '92-'93)

Tigers winning the World Series would be like the Buccaneers winning the Super Bowl!! Oh wait...

The comparison really isn't there. I'm guessing you made it cause both the Buccaneers and the Tigers were two of the worst teams ever in their sport at one point. The difference is that the Bucs had made three straight playoff appearances before they won their championship in their fourth. They were an established contender for a while, one that no one took too seriously, but a contender all the same. The Tigers came out of NOWHERE this year. It is more like when the Panthers made the Super Bowl after going 1-15 and 7-9 the last two seasons.
