of the outcomes of going to a race is the chance to see an accident, right? When an accident happens, you want many cars and high speed. Yesterday those fans got the high speed part, just not a lot of cars. But as an added bonus, they got to see a horrible death. So race fans - you got your money's worth. Have fun at next weeks race!

The idea that "race fans" root for crashes is really a NASCAR thing. As a longtime open-wheel fan, the contrary is true, because as a rule open-wheel crashes are SIGNIFICANTLY more dangerous than stock car crashes: not just in fatalities, but also in major injuries like broken bones. This was an awful situation that is a part of the sport. I feel for Dana's family and for everyone he worked with on the track.

I generalized above and the posting was not meant to be cold. Another way to view it would be if all racecars were exactly the same and could only go say, 80 miles per hour.... would people still go? What if they raced against the clock, and not against each other. Staggered starts so the cars are not near each other, each car against the clock. Would the hundreds of thousands of fans still show?
