I'll see your 3rd degree shoulder seperation, and raise you...

...A visit to Dr. James Andrews and a ticket to season ending shoulder surgery. Is it me, or are these so called "journalists" really digging deep for any type of injury update they can get. What ever happened to integrity in journalism? These guys are trying so hard to make a name for themselves, that they will report anything they hear. They probably even interview the complex custodian looking for any info they can get.

Alex Smith is just the latest injury bungle of the season. We have Eli Manning and Osi Umenyiora as huge mis-reports from week one just for starters. I used to wonder why coaches like Bill Belichick report their entire rosters as questionable, but as this season has gone by, I now have my answer. It is the media frenzy which now follows the NFL.

The question I pose, is can this be directly related to Fantasy Football? It is indeed the countries biggest craze. A friendly and polite way for you to gamble with your family, friends and coworkers. I have been a fantasy football fanatic for years, but the last three years the game has absolutely exploded. ESPN and the NFL network must have at least a dozen commercials to try and lure you to use their sites. Not to mention they now have dedicated segments exclusively for fantasy football tips.

Part of fantasy football and winning is having information as fast as possible. And have the most information possible. My question is has this fantasy football craze caused this? Or is it just widespread availability of the internet and all the information made available to anyone who can type on a keyboard and click a mouse?

I personally think that the money that goes into the advertising dollars going to these networks as well as the revenues that go to their websites really drive these media outlets to these extremes. I would love to know your thoughts on it.

Fantasy Football may be part of it, but honestly I think it is more the drive for reporters to get the scoop. The NFL is huge business, and a story about a starting QB being injured--any starting qb--is sure to be picked up by every paper and news website immediately. If it turns out to be true, it's something the writer can brag about ("I broke the story about Alex Smith..."). If it isn't true, the writer never brings it up again and everyone forgets about it. That's the way the profession works.

I agree with how it works totally, but what ever happened to accountability? That is what gets me. If I reported an earnings forcast that was off 7 % towards the red do you think I am keeping my job?

Scoops pay better than hard facts. And sometimes scoops turn out to be false.
