I'll Make-A-Wish, Don't air these fluff pieces on SportsCenter anymore

While I'm being an insensitive prick, I figured I would complain about a ten minute Chris Connelly piece, about a Make-A-Wish kid that just aired on SportsCenter.

First I would like to say that the Make-A-Wish Foundation seems like a fine charity. It's hard not to get behind any organization that brings a moment of happiness to an unfairly short and miserable life. Having said that, I'm not sure SportsCenter is the appropriate place to show these pieces.

Three Issues with this Segment:

1) Perhaps I am being unduly cynical, but Chris Connelly comes off a bit like Ed Norton's character early in "Fight Club", when he attends support groups for diseases that he doesn't have. It seems like he is searching for comfort in the suffering of others (or maybe I am just a huge dick).

2) The ten year old kid in this episode has suffered a great deal, but he seems healthy as a horse right now. His liver disorder only prevents him from playing collision sports, but other than that I think he has a pretty normal life. If you are really going to tug at my heart strings you are going to need some heavier hands.

3) The kid gets to meet Dwyane Wade, his idol. Wade takes him to his house and plays basketball with him in his backyard. They play a little one-on-one and Wade lets the kid win. Cute. No problems with that. But could Chris Connelly not narrate the one-on-one like it was an actual competition. "It was a seesaw battle. Noah fell behind 6 to 5, but then made the last two shots to win the game". An audience of retards thanks for the play-by-play, Chris.

ESPN sucks. That's the problem with a monopoly -- the quality deteriorates.

Very true AA. These make a wish stories that ESPN do are horrible. They are exploiting people in their time of need not helping them.

No, you're not a huge dick. The stories that the kids have are sad. It's just too bad that ESPN makes them seem like the most useless stories you want to watch on TV. If I was Chris, I wouldn't do stories on people who, like you pointed out, who don't have the disease anymore. These stories make me feel really sympathetic for the kids, but Sportcenter makes some of the stuff sound like Animal Planet. (They point the obvious)

that my wish segment was a waste of 15 minutes.

they sometimes don't get to all the highlights, i know that when the mets sucked, they would only get to mets highlights about every other day, so they could play this half baked crap..

i'll stick to dateline nbc...

ESPN Sportscenter jumped the shark about 10 years ago. What is needed is some competition. Sadly, I don't see anything challenging Sportscenter anytime soon.

In defense of ESPN, would you consider the time at the moment in the sports world to be the most exciting time? You had Nascar, College World Series, and an almost no-hitter by some guy that no one knows headlines the news. They have to kill some time.

yeah, any SC (and I'm not a fan of it like I was back about 8 years ago) that leads with a NASCAR road race (get serious, I do one of those on my way home from work everyday) needs something. And the 90-minute Monday show is just begging for filler. They should just run that piece about Jeremy Schapp and Bobby Fischer all summer. That's great television.

I disagree as well. It wasn't the best segment, but it wasn't the worst I have ever seen. There is absolutely nothing going on right now. There is only so much mid-season baseball and mid-season MLS you can talk about. No one cares about the College World Series or the NBA Draft. What do you want them to fill that 15 minutes with? NASCAR?

Hey I know, maybe they should do some more stories about players getting busted for drugs, guns and wife beating. That's so much better than feel-good stories about kids that show that there are some decent athletes.
